Frequently Asked Questions
Does it support Intel 14th Gen Core processors?
Yes. The LGA1700 socket supports Intel Core 14th, 13th and 12th Gen, plus Pentium Gold and Celeron. A BIOS update may be required for 14th Gen on older stock; check the ASUS support page for the latest BIOS.
Does it support DDR4 memory?
No. This is the DDR5 variant — only DDR5 DIMMs are supported, up to 192GB. If you need DDR4, look at the PRIME Z790-P WIFI D4 instead.
How many M.2 slots are there and what speeds do they run?
Three M.2 slots, all PCIe 4.0 x4. M.2_1 is wired to the CPU, M.2_2 and M.2_3 to the Z790 chipset. M.2_3 also supports SATA SSDs.
Does it have native Thunderbolt 4 / USB4?
It includes a Thunderbolt (USB4) header for an optional ASUS Thunderbolt add-in card — there is no native Thunderbolt port on the rear I/O. Rear USB tops out at USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C (20 Gbps).
Singular Expert Insight
Choose the PRIME Z790-P WIFI if you want a clean, well-cooled Z790 base for an Intel 13th / 14th Gen build with DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 headroom — without paying for ROG-tier features you won't use. If you'd rather reuse existing DDR4 RAM, pick the PRIME Z790-P WIFI D4. If your CPU is non-K and you don't plan PCIe 5.0 GPUs, a B760 board will save you money with very little real-world loss.
Buyer's Guide
Buy it if
You're building a 13th or 14th Gen Intel system with DDR5 and want PCIe 5.0, three M.2 slots and WiFi 6 on a balanced Z790 board.
Skip it if
You want to keep your existing DDR4 RAM, you need native Thunderbolt 4 ports, or you're targeting a non-K CPU where B760 is a better value.
Also consider
PRIME Z790-P WIFI D4 if you need DDR4, or a B760 board if you won't overclock and don't need Z790's extra I/O.
