ASUS TUF GAMING A520M-PLUS II — AMD A520 Micro ATX for Socket AM4 with Three Display Outputs

AMD A520 / Socket AM44 x DDR4 up to 128 GBDisplayPort + HDMI + D-SubBIOS FlashBack button

The ASUS TUF GAMING A520M-PLUS II is a micro ATX motherboard on the AMD A520 chipset for Socket AM4, aimed at value Ryzen builds and office systems that need reliable components rather than overclocking headroom. It carries the part number 90MB17G0-M0EAY0 (EAN 4711081154457) and supports AMD Ryzen 5000, 5000 G-Series, 4000 G-Series, 3000 and 3000 G-Series desktop processors, with four DIMM slots taking up to 128 GB of DDR4. Three display outputs (DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI 2.1 and D-Sub) make it a natural fit for APU builds and for reusing an older VGA monitor, while TUF Protection components, a DIGI+ VRM with heatsink and a BIOS FlashBack button cover the reliability side. Typically in stock with fast delivery across Cyprus.

Compatibility — check before buying:
The A520 chipset is AMD’s entry tier for AM4, so two limits matter. First, everything on this board is PCIe 3.0 — the x16 graphics slot, the M.2 slot and both x1 slots. There is no PCIe 4.0 even with a Ryzen 5000 processor; if you want Gen 4 storage speed, choose a B550 board instead. Second, A520 does not support CPU overclocking, and memory overclocking support depends on the CPU. Supported processors are Ryzen 5000, 5000 G-Series, 4000 G-Series, 3000 and 3000 G-Series — Ryzen 1000 and 2000 Series are not supported. The DisplayPort, HDMI and D-Sub outputs only work with a Ryzen processor that has Radeon integrated graphics (a G-Series APU); a standard Ryzen 5 or 7 on AM4 has no iGPU and needs a graphics card. There is no Wi-Fi, no USB Type-C anywhere on the board, and just one M.2 slot. Memory is DDR4 only.
Best For
✓ Budget Ryzen 5000G APU builds with no graphics card
✓ Office and school PCs that still use a VGA monitor
✓ First-time builders who want TUF-grade protection features
✓ Systems needing four DIMM slots on an entry-level board
✓ Builds where BIOS FlashBack simplifies fitting a newer Ryzen
✓ Compact micro ATX cases with a modest power supply
Key Features

Three display outputs including D-Sub
DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI 2.1 at 4K 60 Hz and a genuine D-Sub (VGA) connector cover everything from a current 4K panel to an old office monitor that has no digital input. With a Ryzen G-Series APU this board can run a complete system with no graphics card at all.

Four DDR4 slots, up to 128 GB
Unlike many entry-level micro ATX boards, this one keeps four DIMM sockets and a 128 GB ceiling in dual channel, with rated speeds up to DDR4-4866 when overclocked, depending on the processor. That means you can start with 2 x 8 GB and add another pair later rather than replacing the kit.

TUF Protection and DIGI+ VRM
ASUS TUF Protection covers a DIGI+ digital VRM with a heatsink, ESD Guards, overvoltage protection, TUF LANGuard on the Ethernet port, SafeSlot Core+ reinforcement on the graphics slot and a stainless-steel back I/O panel. These are the parts that decide whether a budget board is still healthy in year five.

BIOS FlashBack with a dedicated button
A rear BIOS FlashBack button updates the UEFI from a USB stick with no CPU, memory or graphics card installed, with an LED to confirm progress. On AM4 that is genuinely useful: it lets you fit a newer Ryzen 5000 chip to a board shipped with an older BIOS without borrowing an older CPU.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the TUF GAMING A520M-PLUS II support PCIe 4.0?
No. The A520 chipset is PCIe 3.0 throughout — the x16 graphics slot, the M.2 slot and the two x1 slots all run at Gen 3 regardless of which supported Ryzen processor you fit. In practice a PCIe 3.0 x16 slot is not a bottleneck for mainstream graphics cards, but a Gen 4 NVMe drive will run at Gen 3 speeds. If Gen 4 storage matters, pick a B550 board.
Can I overclock a Ryzen CPU on this board?
No. A520 does not support CPU overclocking; that is the main distinction between it and B550 or X570. Precision Boost still runs normally, so the processor reaches its rated boost clocks. Memory speed above the JEDEC baseline depends on the CPU, and ASUS rates the board up to DDR4-4866 in overclocked configurations.
Do I need a graphics card with this motherboard?
Only if your processor lacks integrated graphics. The DisplayPort, HDMI and D-Sub outputs are driven by the CPU, so they work with a Ryzen G-Series APU such as a Ryzen 5 5600G. A standard Ryzen 5 5600 or Ryzen 7 5800X has no integrated GPU on AM4 and requires a discrete card in the PCIe 3.0 x16 slot.
What do I need to know before buying this board?
It is Socket AM4 and DDR4, so it does not accept AM5 processors or DDR5 memory. There is one M.2 slot and four SATA ports. There is no Wi-Fi and no USB Type-C port, front or rear. The BIOS FlashBack button on the rear panel lets you update the firmware with no CPU fitted, which is worth doing before installing a Ryzen 5000 chip.
Singular Expert Insight
The A520M-PLUS II is a board with a very specific sweet spot: a Ryzen 5000G APU, four DDR4 slots and three display outputs including D-Sub. That combination builds a complete, quiet office or family PC with no graphics card and no adapters, and the TUF Protection hardware means it should keep doing it for years. Where it stops making sense is a gaming build, because everything is PCIe 3.0 — the graphics slot is fine, but a Gen 4 SSD from our internal SSDs range will run at half its rated sequential speed here, and B550 costs only a little more. Also note there is a single M.2 slot, so plan your storage accordingly and keep the four SATA ports in mind for bulk drives. If you already have DDR4 memory to carry over and you are not chasing benchmark numbers, this is a well-made, honest board at the bottom of the AM4 stack.
Buyer's Guide

Buy it if

You want a dependable, low-cost AM4 board for a Ryzen 5000G APU or a modest gaming build, with four DDR4 slots, three display outputs including VGA, and BIOS FlashBack for painless CPU upgrades.

Skip it if

You want PCIe 4.0 for graphics or storage, you plan to overclock the CPU, you need more than one M.2 slot, or you need Wi-Fi or a USB Type-C port.

Also consider

The GIGABYTE B550M AORUS ELITE if PCIe 4.0 and a second M.2 slot are worth a small premium, or an AM5 board such as the ASUS PRIME B840M-K if you are building new rather than upgrading.
