The AXIS T8611 SFP Module LC.LX (article 5801-801) is a Gigabit SFP transceiver for single-mode fibre, reaching up to 10 km at 1310 nm over an LC duplex connection. Axis states it is compatible with all Axis products with SFP slots, such as the AXIS T8516 PoE+ switch, Axis media converters and PTZ cameras with an SFP port, which makes it the fibre link for long camera runs and outdoor video systems. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It needs single-mode fibre and an LX module at the far end — it will not work on multimode fibre. For multimode runs, order the AXIS T8612 SFP Module LC.SX, which looks the same. Axis publishes two temperature ranges: −40 to 85 °C in the data sheet and −40 to 65 °C on the product page; plan for the lower figure in hot outdoor cabinets. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
