BIXOLON SLP-DX223 — 2-inch direct thermal desktop label printer, 300 dpi
Direct Thermal300 dpiUp to 101.6 mm/sUSB & Ethernet
The BIXOLON SLP-DX223 is a 2-inch desktop label printer that prints by direct thermal at 300 dpi and up to 101.6 mm/s (4 ips), made for product, price and small shelf labels, specimen and asset labels, and narrow receipts up to about 60 mm wide.
It connects over USB 2.0, Ethernet. Its BPL-Z and BPL-E emulations accept ZPL II and EPL label formats, so most labels created for Zebra printers print without rework. It is a compact, single-user or workgroup printer for counters, packing benches, back offices and small warehouses rather than a 24/7 industrial line printer.
In practice it sits between a PC or POS terminal and a roll of labels: you design labels in label software such as BarTender, or print them straight from your ERP, WMS, e-shop back office or courier portal. Label size, gap and darkness are set once in the driver or by a quick media calibration, and after that every print lands in the same place on the label.
Before you order: This is a direct thermal printer. It needs direct thermal (heat-sensitive) labels and does not use a ribbon. Direct thermal labels darken with heat and fade in sunlight, so for labels that must last outdoors or for years choose a thermal transfer model with a ribbon.
What's in the Box
- SLP-DX223 label printer
- AC/DC power adapter and power cord
- USB cable
- No labels — media is ordered separately
What It Means in Practice
- Labels from 15–60 mm wide on rolls up to 130 mm outside diameter — typical 25 to 58 mm product labels and 58 mm receipt rolls fit; 100 mm shipping labels do not.
- At up to 101.6 mm/s (4 ips) a 50 mm long label prints in roughly 0.5 seconds, so batches of a few hundred labels are a matter of minutes.
- On the network (Ethernet) several PCs can print to it, so one printer can serve a packing bench or an office.
- No ribbon to buy or change: running cost is the labels only, and loading a new roll takes seconds.
What Will Not Work
- Media wider than 60 mm or rolls larger than 130 mm outside diameter.
- Ribbons and thermal transfer-only labels — this model has no ribbon mechanism.
- Colour printing, photos or ordinary A4 office printing — it prints one colour (black) on label media.
Key Features
300 dpi on 2-inch labels
12 dots/mm keeps small text, ingredient lists, 2D codes and tiny barcodes readable on labels only 25–58 mm wide.
Smart Media Detection
Automatically recognises gap, black-mark and short labels, so changing roll type does not require a manual calibration.
Network ready
Ethernet lets several PCs or a POS system print to it over the LAN, and USB covers a direct connection.
Options for the job
BIXOLON lists a peeler, auto cutter, external media supply and real-time clock as options for the SLP-DX220 series.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will it print labels designed for a Zebra printer?
In most cases yes, through BPL-Z (ZPL II) or BPL-E (EPL) emulation. Formats using Zebra-specific features should be tested first — send us a sample and we will check it.
Do I need 300 dpi?
For shelf-edge, food, pharmacy or component labels with small print and 2D codes, yes. For simple 1D barcodes and large text, a 203 dpi printer is faster and cheaper.
Can it print 100 × 150 mm shipping labels?
No. The maximum media width is 60 mm. For courier labels choose a 4-inch printer such as the BIXOLON XD3-40d.
Can I print courier labels from the carrier website?
Yes. Courier and marketplace portals offer labels as PDF, which prints through the Windows driver once the label size is set. ZPL or EPL files can also be sent to the printer directly, which is faster and keeps barcodes razor-sharp.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The SLP-DX223 is a small-footprint 2-inch printer whose 300 dpi head is its real advantage: dense product, food and price labels stay crisp. Ethernet lets it serve a counter or a small production line from the network. For the wired network connection, use a patch cable from our
network cables range.
✓ Buy it if you print small, detailed labels up to 60 mm wide and want them sharp.
✕ Skip it if you need 4-inch shipping labels or durable thermal transfer prints.
→ Also consider Zebra ZD411d 300 dpi or Brother TD-2320D300 for another 2-inch 300 dpi option.
