The Brother BU-229CL is the genuine transfer belt unit for Brother's current HL-L3200, HL-L8200, DCP-L3500, MFC-L3700 and MFC-L8300 colour printer families, rated by Brother at approximately 50,000 pages. It is the part to order when your printer reports that the belt is near its end of life or when colour prints show repeating marks, streaks or faded areas that new toner and a new drum have not fixed.
The belt carries each colour from the drum to the paper, so it wears gradually with every page. Replacing it is a user task: open the front cover, slide out the drum assembly, lift out the old belt and drop in the new one. No tools and no engineer visit are needed.
Before you order: BU-229CL fits the newer HL-L3220CW / DCP-L3520CDW / MFC-L3760CDW generation. Older models such as HL-L3210CW, HL-L3270CDW and MFC-L3750CDW use the BU-223CL belt instead and will not accept this unit.

What It Means in Practice
- Approx. 50,000 pages based on two pages per job; Brother quotes approx. 60,000 pages at three pages per job (A4/Letter single-sided). Many short jobs shorten belt life.
- The printer counts belt life itself and displays a Replace Belt message; after fitting the new unit the counter is reset from the machine menu as described in the user guide.
- A worn belt typically shows as uneven colour density or marks repeating down the page. If the problem only affects one colour, check that colour's toner and drum first.
What Will Not Work
- Not compatible with BU-223CL printers (HL-L3210CW, HL-L3230CDW, HL-L3270CDW, DCP-L3510CDW, DCP-L3550CDW, MFC-L3730CDN, MFC-L3750CDW, MFC-L3770CDW).
- Not for mono laser printers or for HL-L8260CDW / HL-L8360CDW / HL-L9310CDW class machines, which use different belts.
- It will not fix faults caused by an empty toner cartridge, a worn drum or a full waste toner box.
