The Brother BU-220CL is the genuine transfer belt unit for Brother's HL-3140CW, HL-3150CDW and HL-3170CDW printers and the DCP-9015CDW, DCP-9020CDW, MFC-9140CDN, MFC-9330CDW and MFC-9340CDW multifunctions, rated by Brother at approximately 50,000 A4 pages.
In these compact colour printers the belt carries the image from all four drums onto the page. A worn belt shows up as colour misregistration, smudges or repeating marks, and the printer counts down to a belt replacement message. The swap is a user job with no tools.
Before you order: BU-220CL is for the HL-3140CW/3150CDW/3170CDW, DCP-9015CDW/9020CDW and MFC-9140CDN/9330CDW/9340CDW. It does not fit the older HL-3040CN family (BU-200CL) or the larger HL-L8000 series.

What It Means in Practice
- Brother rates the belt at approx. 50,000 A4/Letter pages.
- In these printers the drums (DR-241CL set or single DR-241CL-BK/-CMY) are rated at approx. 15,000 pages, so you will replace drums several times before the belt.
- The WT-220CL waste toner box is also rated at approx. 50,000 pages and often falls due with the belt.
- On the HL-31xx, reset the belt counter by holding Go, pressing Up, choosing Belt Unit and confirming.
What Will Not Work
- It will not fit the HL-3040CN/3070CW family — that uses BU-200CL.
- It is not a drum; pale or missing single colours are normally a toner or drum issue.
- It does not clear a waste toner box message (needs WT-220CL).
- It will not fit the HL-L3200 or HL-L8000 series.

On the HL-3100 family the belt is the longest-lived of the image parts, so when it comes up the printer has usually done serious work — worth replacing if the printer is otherwise sound. If the waste toner box warning is also close, order both together to avoid a second stop. Our printer accessories and service parts page lists other parts for these printers.
