KVM switches let one keyboard, monitor and mouse control several computers or servers — from 2-port desktop switches for home and office to 8- and 16-port rack models and 19" LCD consoles for the server room. HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA and USB-C, from StarTech.com, Lindy, Digitus, LevelOne, TRENDnet and other brands.
Which KVM switch do I need?
- Ports — the number of computers you want to control (2, 4, 8 or 16).
- Video — match the connectors of your computers and monitor: HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA or USB-C. For a 4K monitor choose a switch that states 4K at 60 Hz. If you work on two screens per computer, choose a dual-monitor (dual-head) model.
- USB-C KVM — one cable per laptop carries video, keyboard/mouse and charging (check the stated PD wattage against your laptop).
- Keyboard and mouse — most KVMs emulate the keyboard and mouse so switching is instant and hotkeys work. Gaming mice, special keyboards, webcams or USB drives need a switch with a USB 2.0/3.0 hub port.
- Server room — rack KVMs with a 1U LCD console (screen and keyboard in one drawer) save space; they usually connect through dedicated KVM cables ordered separately.
Good to know: some switches in this category share only one thing — an HDMI or DisplayPort switch shares just the screen, a USB sharing switch just the peripherals. A full KVM switch handles keyboard, video and mouse together. Check whether cables are included.
