Patch cables and installation cable for offices, server racks and home networks — Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, Cat7 and Cat8, from 15 cm patch cords to 500 m drums, by Digitus, Equip, Intellinet, EFB, Lanberg and other brands.
Which network cable do I need?
- Cat5e — 1 Gbps up to 100 m. Enough for desktops, printers and IP phones.
- Cat6 — 1 Gbps up to 100 m, 10 Gbps up to about 55 m. The usual choice for new office points.
- Cat6a — 10 Gbps over the full 100 m. Choose it for Wi-Fi 6/6E/7 access points, NAS and switch uplinks, and high-power PoE devices.
- Cat7 / Cat7a — shielded S/FTP cable, mostly sold as installation cable. Terminated with RJ45 it performs like Cat6a in practice.
- Cat8 — 25/40 Gbps up to 30 m. For short links inside the server rack or data centre.
U/UTP vs F/UTP vs S/FTP: unshielded (U/UTP) is fine for most offices. Shielded cable is for runs next to power lines, machinery or lifts — and it only helps if the sockets and patch panel are shielded and grounded too.
CCA vs pure copper: CCA (copper-clad aluminium) is cheaper and fine for short patch cords. For PoE devices and permanent in-wall runs, choose pure-copper cable.
Patch cable vs installation cable: patch cables are stranded with moulded RJ45 plugs, for connecting devices. Installation cable on a drum is solid-core without connectors and is terminated on keystone jacks or a patch panel.
LSZH jacket: low smoke, zero halogen — often required in offices and public buildings.
