Adapters that connect a monitor, TV or projector to a laptop through USB — USB-C to HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA and DVI, adapters with pass-through charging, and USB 3.0 adapters that add extra screens to any computer. From StarTech.com, j5create, Delock, Belkin, Club 3D and other brands.
Which USB video adapter do I need?
- USB-C adapters (DisplayPort Alt Mode) — no driver needed; the picture is as good as a built-in port. The laptop USB-C port must carry video — look for the DP or Thunderbolt ⚡ symbol next to it.
- USB-A / USB 3.0 adapters — work on any USB 3.0 port, even without video support, through a driver. Ideal for adding extra office monitors; not meant for gaming or video editing.
- Resolution — for a 4K monitor choose an adapter that states 4K at 60 Hz; 4K at 30 Hz feels sluggish when you move the mouse. VGA and DVI adapters stop at about 1920×1200.
- With charging (PD) — lets you charge the laptop through the adapter while the screen is connected; plug the laptop charger into the adapter.
Good to know: MacBooks with base M1 or M2 chips support only one external display natively — a second screen needs a USB 3.0 adapter with driver. Dual-HDMI USB-C adapters that rely on MST show the same picture on both screens on macOS.
