Which converter do I need?
- Read the direction. “X to Y” means the computer or source has X and the screen has Y. Most converters work only in that direction — a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter will not connect an HDMI laptop to a DisplayPort monitor.
- Digital to VGA (HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C → VGA) always needs an active converter, usually up to 1920×1200. VGA to HDMI is also active and often needs USB power and a separate audio cable.
- DisplayPort to HDMI — a passive adapter works on most PCs; choose an active one for 4K at 60 Hz or when connecting three or more screens to one graphics card.
- HDMI audio extractor — takes the sound out of an HDMI signal to optical or 3.5 mm, for amplifiers and soundbars without HDMI. EDID emulator — keeps the resolution and window layout stable when a screen is switched off or shared through a KVM switch.
