CHERRY G84-4700 — USB Numeric Keypad, Black
21 keysML gold crosspoint20 M strokesProgrammable
The G84-4700 is a working tool rather than an accessory, and CHERRY specifies it like one. Inside are CHERRY ML switches with gold crosspoint contacts — a real mechanical switch, scaled down, in a keypad the size of a pack of cards — rated for over 20 million key confirmations per individual key. That figure is why this part number turns up on tills, in warehouses and on production lines rather than only on office desks: it is built for a decade of somebody hitting the same four keys. The housing is 90 x 132 x 36 mm with 17 + 4 keys and ABS keycaps, and it connects by USB plug and play. The keys are freely programmable through CHERRY’s software macros, so the four extra keys can become whatever the application needs, and the firmware supports Code Set 3 and UnifiedPOS — which is the part that matters if this is going onto a point-of-sale system rather than a PC. Finish: Black, German layout.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Know what this is and what it deliberately is not. It is a programmable, long-life mechanical keypad with POS-grade firmware support. It is not illuminated, it has no status LEDs, and CHERRY explicitly lists no N-key rollover, no anti-ghosting and no key encryption and no integrated metal plate — if you need a secure keypad for PIN entry, this is the wrong product and we will point you at a different one. The layout is German; CHERRY builds the same pad in DE, ES, FR and US layouts and in black and grey under different part numbers, so check the code rather than the photograph. On a number pad the layout question is smaller than on a keyboard — digits are digits — but the legends on the surrounding keys follow the German version. The operating system CHERRY publishes is Windows; no macOS or Linux listing is given, so we promise none. Programming the keys needs CHERRY’s keyboard tool software on a Windows machine, though the pad types digits perfectly well without ever installing it. Cable length and weight are not published by CHERRY, so we quote none.

Programmable keys
Every key can be reassigned by software macro, so the four extra keys become whatever the application actually needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use it for PIN entry?
No. CHERRY states this model has no key encryption and no integrated metal plate. For secure PIN entry you need a purpose-built encrypting keypad — tell us the application and we will find the right one.
Does the German layout matter on a number pad?
Very little for the digits themselves; it affects the legends on the surrounding keys. CHERRY also builds this pad in ES, FR and US layouts under different part numbers if you would rather match your keyboard exactly.
Do I need software to use it?
No. It types digits plug and play over USB. The software is only needed if you want to reprogram keys with macros, and it runs on Windows.
Singular Expert Insight
Twenty million strokes per key is the whole argument: this is the keypad you buy when a cheap one has already failed on you, or when it is going somewhere nobody will be able to replace it easily. Note it is not a secure pad. See our
