The Cisco GLC-GE-100FX= is a 100BASE-FX SFP module designed to run in the Gigabit Ethernet SFP ports of Cisco switches and routers, carrying 100 Mbps over multimode fibre up to 2 km at 1300 nm. It lets a modern Gigabit switch connect to older 100 Mbps fibre equipment, such as legacy switches, industrial controllers or building systems. In practice, multimode optics are the cheaper choice for links inside one building: most server rooms and floor risers already carry OM3 or OM4 fibre, and the module plus a short LC patch cord is all a port needs. Before you order, check the fibre grade printed on the cable jacket and the real length of the run, including patch panels.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It works only in Gigabit Ethernet SFP ports of Cisco devices. For Fast Ethernet or dual-rate FE/GE ports Cisco makes the GLC-FE-100FX instead. Cisco states it is not compatible with media converters, NICs or third-party products. It runs at 100 Mbps only, and the far end must be 100BASE-FX on multimode fibre — not a 1000BASE-SX module. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
