The Cisco QSFP-40/100-SRBD= is a dual-rate bidirectional transceiver that runs 100 Gbps or 40 Gbps over a single duplex LC multimode pair, reaching 100 m on OM4 at 100G and 150 m at 40G. It lets a data centre move from 10G to 40G and then 100G on the duplex LC fibre it already has, with the same optic at both speeds. The feed’s “QSFP+” label undersells it: at 100G it needs a QSFP28 port. In practice, multimode optics are the cheaper choice for links inside one building: most server rooms and floor risers already carry OM3 or OM4 fibre, and the module plus a short LC patch cord is all a port needs. Before you order, check the fibre grade printed on the cable jacket and the real length of the run, including patch panels.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Pair it with another QSFP-40/100-SRBD, or with a QSFP-40G-SR-BD when running at 40G. It will not link to SR4 modules (different connector and optics). For 100G the host port must support QSFP28. Its operating range is narrower than standard optics: +10 to +60 °C at 100G. Cisco’s QSFP-100G-SR1.2 is a 100G-only BiDi with no 40G mode. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
