Cisco GLC-LH-SMD – 1000BASE-LX/LH Gigabit SFP with DOM for Single-Mode and Multimode Fibre
1000BASE-LX/LH1310 nm10 km SMFDOM
The Cisco GLC-LH-SMD is a Gigabit Ethernet SFP transceiver for 1000BASE-LX/LH links of up to 10 km over single-mode fibre, or up to 550 m over multimode fibre with a mode-conditioning patch cord. It is the standard long-wavelength 1G optic for Cisco Catalyst access switches, ISR routers and industrial platforms that need to reach another building or a remote cabinet.
It includes digital optical monitoring (DOM) per SFF-8472, so the switch can report optical transmit and receive power, temperature, laser bias current and supply voltage — very useful when troubleshooting long fibre runs.
Before you order: On multimode fibre, Cisco requires an IEEE-specified mode-conditioning patch cord regardless of the span length — and a different cord type for 62.5 µm and 50 µm fibre. Without it the link may be unstable or not come up.
What's in the Box
- 1 × Cisco GLC-LH-SMD= 1000BASE-LX/LH SFP transceiver
- Dust plug on the optical port
- No fibre patch cords or mode-conditioning cords included
What It Means in Practice
- Single-mode: Gigabit link up to 10 km between buildings or to a remote cabinet.
- Multimode: up to 550 m, using mode-conditioning patch cords at both ends.
- DOM readings (Tx/Rx power, temperature) visible on the switch — handy for spotting dirty connectors or excessive loss.
- Extended temperature rating (−5 to 85 °C) for wiring closets and cabinets.
What Will Not Work
- Runs at 1 Gbit/s only — will not link to a 10G optic or a 100 Mb SFP.
- Will not work on multimode fibre without mode-conditioning patch cords.
- Not for runs beyond 10 km on single-mode fibre.
- Requires an SFP port that supports 1000BASE-X — some 10G-only SFP+ ports do not accept 1G optics.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a mode-conditioning cord?
Only on multimode fibre — and then always, regardless of distance. On single-mode fibre use standard LC/UPC single-mode patch cords.
Will it talk to an LX optic from another brand?
Yes, 1000BASE-LX is a standard; any compliant 1310 nm LX/LH optic on the far end will link.
Can I use it in a 10G SFP+ port?
Only if that port supports 1G SFPs. Many Catalyst and Nexus SFP+ ports do; some 10G-only ports do not.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
GLC-LH-SMD is the safe default for Gigabit fibre between buildings: one optic covers single-mode up to 10 km and, with the right cords, older multimode runs. The DOM readings are worth using — logging Rx power at install time gives you a baseline when a link degrades years later. Need the switch at the other end? Browse our

✓ Buy it if you need a Gigabit fibre link up to 10 km on single-mode, or up to 550 m on existing multimode with conditioning cords, on a Cisco SFP port.
✕ Skip it if you need 10G (choose SFP-10G-LR or SR) or the run is short multimode (GLC-SX-MMD is simpler).
→ Also consider Cisco GLC-SX-MMD= for short multimode Gigabit links and GLC-SX-MM-RGD= for industrial temperature ranges.
Send us the fibre type, distance and switch model and we will confirm the optic and any patch cords needed.
