The DIGITUS DN-81011 is an industrial Gigabit SFP module for single-mode fibre: 1310 nm over an LC duplex connection on 9/125 µm fibre, up to 20 km, rated from −40 to +85 °C. It is MSA compliant and DIGITUS lists it as universal and Cisco compatible, for industrial switches linking buildings, sites and outdoor cabinets. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs more than a few hundred metres: the 9/125 µm fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It needs two single-mode fibres and a 1310 nm Gigabit module at the far end. It will not run on multimode fibre, and it will not pair with DIGITUS’ single-strand BiDi modules DN-81003 / DN-81004, which also reach 20 km but use one fibre and a simplex connector. It has no DDM. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Built for single-mode (9/125 µm) fibre, the type used between buildings, floors and sites. It will not run over the orange or aqua multimode fibre found in many racks — the fibre type has to match at both ends.

A link only comes up when both ends use the same standard, speed and media. Order the far-end module, the patch cords and any spares in one go and the link works on day one.
