DIGITUS DA-70255 — a wired network socket and three USB ports from one USB-C port

Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/10003 x USB-A at 5 GbpsBus-powered, 32 gDriver installs itself

DIGITUS calls the DA-70255 a USB Type-C 3-Port Hub with Gigabit Ethernet, and that is exactly what it is: one USB-C plug on a 20 cm lead becomes a 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ-45 socket and three full-size USB 3.0 Type-A ports at up to 5 Gbps. It weighs 32 g, needs no power supply and no driver installation — the Realtek RTL8153 controller inside is supported natively by current operating systems and DIGITUS states the driver is installed automatically when you plug it in.

Compatibility — check before buying:
This is a hub, not a docking station, whatever a catalogue listing may call it: there is no power input, no Power Delivery and no video output, so it will not charge your notebook and it will not drive a monitor. Everything is bus-powered — the Gigabit controller and the three USB ports share one host port and one 5 Gbps link, so a full-rate network transfer and a fast drive copy will compete, and a bus-powered hard drive alongside busy networking is more than one port should be asked to supply. The host plug is USB-C only; the DIGITUS DA-70250-1 is the identical unit with a USB-A plug, and the two look the same in photographs.

Best For

✓ USB-C laptops with no Ethernet socket
✓ Sites and offices where the network must be wired
✓ Engineers configuring switches, NAS and appliances
✓ Meeting rooms with a wall socket and poor Wi-Fi
✓ Getting USB-A ports back on a thin laptop
✓ Travel kits with no room for a power supply

Key Features

Gigabit, not Fast Ethernet
A full 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ-45 port — a real Gigabit connection rather than the 100 Mbps socket that still appears on budget adapters, and the difference shows on every large file copy.

Three USB 3.0 ports as well
Three full-size USB-A ports at up to 5 Gbps come with the network socket, so one small aluminium body replaces both the Ethernet dongle and the hub you would otherwise carry.

32 g and nothing to install
The Realtek RTL8153 controller is supported natively by current systems and DIGITUS states the driver installs automatically on insertion. There is no power supply to pack and nothing to configure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a docking station?
No, and it matters for what you should expect from it. DIGITUS names it a USB Type-C 3-Port Hub with Gigabit Ethernet and files it under USB Hubs, and the unit has no power input, no Power Delivery and no video output. A dock charges the laptop and drives a display over the same cable; this adds a network socket and three USB ports and nothing else. If a listing elsewhere calls it a docking station, that is catalogue wording, not the manufacturer’s.
How is it different from the DIGITUS DA-70250-1?
Only the plug. The DA-70255 has a USB-C connector; the DA-70250-1 has USB-A. Same three USB ports, same Gigabit socket, same 95 x 27.2 x 16 mm body, same 32 g, same 20 cm cable. Order by the port on your laptop, because the two are indistinguishable in photographs and this is the most common mix-up in the range.
Do I need to install anything for the Ethernet to work?
No. DIGITUS states the driver is installed automatically when the device is inserted, and the RTL8153 chipset is supported natively by current versions of macOS, Windows, Chrome OS and Linux. On a very old operating system you may need a driver from Assmann’s support site — tell us the version and we will check before you order.
Singular Expert Insight
Two dongles become one, and that is the entire case for the DA-70255. It sits at the light end of our USB hub range: 32 g, bus-powered, nothing to plug into the wall, and a Gigabit socket that behaves properly rather than the 100 Mbps compromise. Its limits follow directly from being bus-powered — one host port feeds the network controller and three USB sockets, so it is built for peripherals and a network cable, not for external hard drives. The thing to decide before ordering is whether you actually want a hub or a dock: if the laptop also needs to charge and drive a monitor over the same cable, that is our docking stations, not this. And check the connector: DA-70255 is USB-C, DA-70250-1 is USB-A, and they are the same product otherwise.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

Your laptop has USB-C and no Ethernet socket, and the network has to be wired. You want three full-size USB ports back at the same time. You want 32 g, no drivers and no power supply to carry.

Skip it if

You expected it to charge the laptop or drive a monitor — it does neither. Your laptop has no USB-C port: take the DA-70250-1. You plan to run bus-powered hard drives alongside heavy network traffic.

Also consider

DIGITUS DA-70250-1 if your host port is USB-A. A USB-C dock if charging and video are also needed. A powered hub if the devices are drives and must stay powered.
