The Edimax BT-8500 is a nano-size USB adapter that adds Bluetooth 5.0 to a desktop PC or laptop. It plugs into a USB-A port and stays there — at 7.1 × 14.9 × 17.4 mm and 2 g it barely sticks out. It is dual mode, so it connects both classic Bluetooth devices (BR/EDR, up to 3 Mbps) such as headsets, speakers and keyboards, and Bluetooth Low Energy devices (up to 2 Mbps) such as fitness trackers and modern mice. Edimax states that Bluetooth 5.0 gives four times the range of Bluetooth 4.2, uses an internal PIFA antenna, and lists plug-and-play installation on Windows 8.1, 10 and 11, plus Linux support. It is BQB certified. Typical uses: a desktop PC without Bluetooth, or a laptop whose built-in Bluetooth has failed or is too old for a new device.

Compatibility — check before buying: Edimax lists Windows 8.1, 10 and 11 (plug and play) and Linux kernels 2.6.32 to 5.3. Windows 7 and macOS are not in the official list. If the PC already has built-in Bluetooth, Windows can use only one Bluetooth radio at a time — you may need to disable the built-in one in Device Manager. Do I need to install a driver?
Not on Windows 8.1, 10 and 11 — Edimax lists plug and play there. Linux kernels 2.6.32 to 5.3 are also supported.
Does it work on a Mac?
macOS is not in Edimax’s official list, so we do not recommend it for Macs.
My laptop already has Bluetooth. Will it work?
Yes, but Windows uses one Bluetooth radio at a time. Disable the built-in adapter in Device Manager so the BT-8500 takes over.
Can I connect several devices?
Yes, a headset, keyboard and mouse can be paired at the same time. The number of simultaneous connections depends on the devices.
