It carries data at up to 10 Gbps and is backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 devices, with 5 V / 900 mA available downstream for the connected peripheral. It is the practical answer when a camera, scanner, headset or flash drive needs to sit across a desk, on a shelf or behind a screen rather than plugged directly into the machine. Compatibility — check before buying:
This cable is directional: the USB-C plug goes into the host (laptop, PC, dock or hub) and the USB-A socket takes the device. It is not reversible and it is not a USB-C-to-USB-C cable. It carries data and bus power only — there is no video output: a USB-A socket cannot pass DisplayPort Alt Mode, so it will not drive a monitor. Downstream power is limited to 5 V / 900 mA, the standard USB 3 port allowance — fine for keyboards, mice, webcams, headsets, scanners and flash drives, but a bus-powered external drive or an unpowered hub may need its own power supply at this distance. To reach the full 10 Gbps, both the host and the connected device must support USB 3.2 Gen 2; otherwise the link falls back to USB 3.0 (5 Gbps) or USB 2.0 speeds. This is not a charging cable and does not support USB Power Delivery.
