Emtec D280 Dual 64 GB — USB-A and USB-C in Recycled Plastic

USB-A + USB-C64 GB80 MB/s read / 20 MB/s write100% recycled plastic

The Emtec D280 Dual is a 64 GB USB 3.2 Gen 1 flash drive that carries both a USB-A and a USB-C connector, exposed one at a time by a swivel body made from 100 per cent recycled plastic. Emtec publishes both speeds — up to 80 MB/s read and up to 20 MB/s write — and lists iOS and Android alongside Windows and macOS for Type-C devices.

Compatibility — check before buying:
???? One letter separates this drive from a very different one. ECMMD64GD283, this drive, is the D280 Dual: USB-A and USB-C. ECMMD64GC283 is the C280, which is USB-C only and will not plug into a normal laptop port at all. Both are called 280, both are silver, both are 100 per cent recycled plastic, both publish the same 80 MB/s read and 20 MB/s write, and both come in the same four capacities — a comparison table will not warn you. If any machine you use still has rectangular ports, you want the D. The swivel proves the difference physically: Emtec publishes two lengths for this drive, 37 mm with the USB-C end out and 40.3 mm with the USB-A end out. Two smaller points: the 80/20 figures are published for the whole range rather than per capacity, and Emtec publishes only those two lengths — no width, no height, no weight.

Best For

✓ Moving photos and video between a phone and a laptop without cables
✓ Mixed households and offices with both USB-A and USB-C machines
✓ Buyers who want recycled materials as part of the decision
✓ USB-C phones, tablets and iPads that accept USB storage
✓ Anyone who would otherwise carry a drive plus an adapter
✓ A drive with no cap to lose

Key Features

Both connectors on one swivel
USB-A and USB-C, exposed one at a time by rotating the body. Nothing detaches, so there is no cap to lose, and no adapter to carry.

100% recycled plastic
Emtec states the housing is entirely recycled plastic — an absolute claim rather than a minimum, and the same material as its C280. Among flash drives that remains rare enough to be worth stating.

Both speeds published
Up to 80 MB/s read and up to 20 MB/s write. Many manufacturers publish read only; here you know the slower half of the job before you buy.

Wide temperature range
Emtec rates it from -25 °C to 85 °C both in use and in storage — considerably wider than the 0 to 45 °C typical of drives at this price.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make sure I get the dual one and not the USB-C-only one?
By the letter before the last three digits. ECMMD64GD283 is this D280 Dual, with both connectors. ECMMD64GC283 is the C280, USB-C only. They are the same colour, the same material, the same capacities and the same published speeds, so nothing else in a listing will tell them apart.
Will it work with my phone or iPad?
If the device has a USB-C port and accepts USB storage, yes — Emtec lists iOS and Android for Type-C devices alongside Windows 10 and macOS 11. An iPhone with a Lightning connector cannot use it, and no adapter is included. Tell us the model and we will confirm.
How big is it, exactly?
Emtec publishes only the length, and two of them, because the swivel changes it: 37 mm with the USB-C end out and 40.3 mm with the USB-A end out. It does not publish width, height or weight for this model, so we do not print figures for them.
Is the recycled-plastic claim about the drive or the packaging?
The drive. Emtec states the D280 housing is 100 per cent recycled plastic — an absolute figure rather than a minimum — and the same claim applies to its C280 sibling.
Singular Expert Insight
A dual-ended swivel in recycled plastic, with both speeds published and a temperature range from -25 to 85 °C, is a well-specified drive for the money. Emtec is also one of the few brands that publishes a write figure at all, and 20 MB/s is honest rather than flattering — plan on copying files off it faster than onto it. The entire risk with this product sits in one character of the part number: the C280 beside it is USB-C only and identical in every other published respect. That is why the warning is at the top of this page rather than in the specification. If you want the fastest dual-ended drive rather than the greenest, the Kingston microDuo 3C G3 in our USB flash drives range publishes 200 MB/s read. For large working files, an external SSD is the right class of product.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You want one drive that plugs into both a laptop and a USB-C phone, you like that the housing is recycled plastic, and 80 MB/s read with a published 20 MB/s write suits what you move.

Skip it if

You need speed — 20 MB/s write is slow for large transfers. Or every device you own uses the same port, in which case a single-connector drive costs less.

Also consider

Emtec C280 ECMMD64GC283 only if every device you own is USB-C. Kingston DataTraveler microDuo 3C G3 for a dual-ended drive at 200 MB/s read. Intenso Twist Line for a dual-ended aluminium alternative.
