The equip 147923 is a 5 m TOSLINK optical digital audio cable (S/PDIF) with a TOSLINK male plug on each end, for connecting a TV, games console or media player to a soundbar, AV receiver or home audio system.

It carries the digital audio stream as light, so it is immune to electrical interference and ground loops, and the 5 m length lets you reach equipment across a TV wall or a small room.

• Use it when the soundbar or receiver has an optical input (often labelled OPTICAL or DIGITAL AUDIO IN) and HDMI ARC/eARC is not available or not working reliably.
• Optical S/PDIF carries stereo PCM and compressed 5.1 surround formats such as Dolby Digital and DTS; that is a limit of the S/PDIF standard, not of the cable.
• On the TV, set the audio output to the optical or PCM/bitstream option and turn the TV speakers off.
• Light travels inside the cable, so avoid kinking it or bending it sharply behind wall-mounted TVs.

• Lossless and object-based formats (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Atmos over TrueHD, multichannel PCM): S/PDIF cannot carry them; you need HDMI eARC.
• 3.5 mm mini-optical (mini-TOSLINK) jacks found on some laptops and portable players: they need a mini-TOSLINK adapter or a TOSLINK-to-mini cable.
• Coaxial digital (RCA) inputs: optical and coaxial S/PDIF use different connectors and need a converter.
• Fibre optic network ports (LC, SC, ST): TOSLINK is an audio connector, not a data network fibre.
