G.Skill Ares 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3-1600 CL9 — low-profile desktop memory kit for DDR3 PCs
16GB kit · 2x 8GBDDR3-1600 · CL9-9-9-241.50V · Intel XMPLow-profile heatspreader
The G.Skill Ares F3-1600C9D-16GAR is a 16GB (2x 8GB) dual-channel DDR3 desktop memory kit rated at 1600 MT/s with CL9-9-9-24 timings at 1.50V, built to upgrade or revive older Intel and AMD DDR3 desktop PCs.
Its low-profile red Ares heatspreader is designed to clear large tower CPU coolers and fit small form factor cases. SPD default and XMP profile are both 1600 MT/s at 1.50V, so on most compatible boards it runs at its rated speed without manual tuning; G.Skill notes that achieving the rated speed may require XMP or BIOS adjustment depending on the platform.
Before you order: This is standard 1.5V DDR3 desktop memory (240-pin DIMM). It does not fit DDR4 or DDR5 boards, laptops (SO-DIMM) or systems that only accept 1.35V DDR3L. Send us your motherboard or PC model and we will confirm compatibility.
What's in the Box
- 2x G.Skill Ares 8GB DDR3-1600 desktop memory modules (matched kit)
- Modules are supplied as a tested set — G.Skill advises not to mix kits
What It Means in Practice
- 16GB lets an older DDR3 desktop run a modern browser, office suite and Windows comfortably instead of swapping to disk
- Dual-channel kit: install one module per channel (usually slots 2 and 4) for full bandwidth
- CL9 at 1600 MT/s is one of the tightest common DDR3-1600 timings, giving a small responsiveness gain over CL11 kits
- Low-profile heatspreader avoids conflicts with large tower coolers
What Will Not Work
- It does not fit DDR4 or DDR5 motherboards — the notch position is different
- It is not laptop memory: notebooks need SO-DIMM modules
- Boards or CPUs that accept only DDR3L 1.35V (some small and low-power platforms) are not a match
- Mixing with existing modules of different timings or kits can cause instability — G.Skill sells it as a matched pair
- It is not ECC or registered memory for servers

Frequently Asked Questions
Will it work with my older Intel or AMD PC?
If the board takes standard 1.5V DDR3 desktop DIMMs, yes. Send us the motherboard model and we will check maximum capacity and speed support.
Do I need to enable XMP?
Usually not, because SPD is already 1600 MT/s at 1.50V. If the board boots at a lower speed, enable XMP in the BIOS.
Can I add it to my existing 8GB?
It may work, but mixing kits can cause instability. For best results, use this kit on its own.
Is this DDR3L?
No. It is standard 1.50V DDR3. Systems that require 1.35V DDR3L need different modules.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
For an older DDR3 desktop, going to 16GB is still one of the cheapest ways to make it usable again. The Ares kit is a solid choice: tight CL9 timings, 1600 MT/s at default SPD and a heatspreader that will not fight your cooler. Check our
memory (RAM) range for other generations.
✓ Buy it if your desktop board takes 1.5V DDR3 DIMMs and you want 16GB in a matched dual-channel kit.
✕ Skip it if your system is DDR4/DDR5, a laptop, or a DDR3L-only platform.
→ Also consider DDR3L SO-DIMM modules for laptops, or a DDR4/DDR5 platform upgrade if you are replacing the board anyway.
Not sure it fits your setup? Send us the model of your rack, switch or device and we will check compatibility before you order.
