GIGABYTE B550M AORUS ELITE — AMD B550 Micro ATX for Socket AM4 with PCIe 4.0 and Four DDR4 Slots

AMD B550 / Socket AM4PCIe 4.0 x16 + PCIe 4.0 M.24 x DDR4 up to 128 GBECC memory supported

The GIGABYTE B550M AORUS ELITE is a micro ATX motherboard on the AMD B550 chipset for Socket AM4, and it remains one of the most sensible bases for a Ryzen 5000 build or an upgrade of an existing AM4 system. It carries the part number B550M AORUS ELITE (EAN 4719331809546) and supports AMD Ryzen 5000, 5000 G-Series, 4000 G-Series, 3000 and 3000 G-Series processors, with four DDR4 slots taking up to 128 GB of ECC or non-ECC unbuffered memory. A 5+3 phase pure digital VRM with low RDS(on) MOSFETs feeds the socket, the CPU-attached M.2 slot and the x16 graphics slot run at PCIe 4.0, and Q-Flash Plus lets you update the BIOS with no CPU installed. Typically in stock with fast delivery across Cyprus.

Compatibility — check before buying:
This board is Socket AM4 and DDR4 — it is not compatible with AM5 processors or DDR5 memory. GIGABYTE lists support for Ryzen 5000, 5000 G-Series, 4000 G-Series, 3000 and 3000 G-Series processors; first and second generation Ryzen (1000 and 2000 Series) are not supported on B550. PCIe 4.0 requires a Ryzen 5000 or 3000 Series CPU — with a 4000G or 5000G APU the graphics slot and the CPU M.2 slot drop to PCIe 3.0. The second M.2 slot is only PCIe 3.0 x2, so treat it as secondary storage rather than a second fast boot drive. The HDMI and DVI-D outputs only work with a Ryzen processor that has Radeon integrated graphics (a G-Series APU); with a standard Ryzen 5 or 7 you must fit a graphics card. There is no Wi-Fi and no rear USB Type-C port. The board is micro ATX at 24.4 x 24.4 cm and uses one 24-pin ATX plus one 8-pin 12V connector.
Best For
✓ Ryzen 5000 gaming builds on a tight budget
✓ Upgrading an existing AM4 system without changing memory
✓ Compact micro ATX builds needing a PCIe 4.0 NVMe boot drive
✓ Workstations that want ECC unbuffered DDR4 in a mainstream board
✓ Builds with four DIMM slots for a 128 GB ceiling
✓ Systems with plenty of fan headers and RGB headers for lighting
Key Features

PCIe 4.0 for graphics and the primary M.2
With a Ryzen 5000 or 3000 Series processor, the Ultra Durable x16 slot and the CPU-attached M.2 connector both run at PCIe 4.0, so a Gen 4 NVMe drive delivers its full sequential speed. The upper M.2 slot accepts drives up to 22110 in length, which is useful for longer enterprise-class SSDs.

Four DDR4 slots with ECC support
Four DIMM sockets take up to 128 GB in dual channel with 32 GB modules, and the board supports ECC as well as non-ECC unbuffered DDR4 on processors that enable it. Rated memory speeds reach DDR4-4733 when overclocked. Four slots also means you can start with two modules and add more later.

5+3 phase pure digital VRM
A 5+3 phase pure digital VRM with low RDS(on) MOSFETs and heatsink coverage handles Ryzen 5000 loads, backed by five onboard temperature sensors and three hybrid fan headers that can drive PWM or DC fans. That is enough headroom for a Ryzen 7 or Ryzen 9 at stock clocks in a well-ventilated case.

Q-Flash Plus and RGB Fusion headers
Q-Flash Plus updates the BIOS from a USB stick with no CPU, memory or graphics card installed — the feature that saves an AM4 build when a newer Ryzen needs a newer BIOS. Two addressable LED headers and three RGB LED headers give plenty of lighting connectivity for a micro ATX board.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Ryzen processors work with the B550M AORUS ELITE?
GIGABYTE lists AMD Ryzen 5000, 5000 G-Series, 4000 G-Series, 3000 and 3000 G-Series processors on Socket AM4. First and second generation Ryzen chips (1000 and 2000 Series) are not supported on the B550 chipset at all. Newer CPUs may need a BIOS update, and Q-Flash Plus can apply one with no CPU fitted.
Do I get PCIe 4.0 with every supported CPU?
No. The x16 graphics slot and the CPU-attached M.2 slot run at PCIe 4.0 only with Ryzen 5000 and 3000 Series processors. With a 4000G or 5000G APU they operate at PCIe 3.0, because those chips do not expose Gen 4 lanes. The second M.2 slot is PCIe 3.0 x2 in every configuration.
Can I use the HDMI output without a graphics card?
Only if your processor has Radeon integrated graphics — that means a G-Series APU such as a Ryzen 5 5600G. Standard Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 desktop chips on AM4 have no integrated GPU, so the HDMI and DVI-D outputs will stay dark and a discrete graphics card is required.
What do I need to know before buying this board?
It is DDR4 and Socket AM4, so it is an upgrade path for existing AM4 systems rather than a route to current AM5 processors. The board is micro ATX at 24.4 x 24.4 cm. There is no Wi-Fi and no rear USB Type-C port. Storage is two M.2 slots (the second one slower, at PCIe 3.0 x2) plus four SATA 6 Gb/s ports.
Singular Expert Insight
AM4 is a mature platform now, and that is exactly what makes the B550M AORUS ELITE interesting: Ryzen 5000 chips and DDR4 kits are cheap, and this board gives you PCIe 4.0 for both the graphics slot and the primary NVMe drive without any of the AM5 platform costs. For anyone already on AM4 who wants to keep their DDR4 memory and just move up to a Ryzen 5000 CPU, it is close to the ideal landing spot. Two details are worth planning around. The second M.2 slot is PCIe 3.0 x2, which is roughly half the speed of a normal Gen 3 slot, so put your fast drive in the upper CPU-attached slot. And there is no integrated graphics unless you buy a G-Series APU, so budget for a card from our graphics cards range. If you are building from scratch with no parts to carry over, an AM5 board makes more long-term sense — but as an upgrade board this one is hard to fault.
Buyer's Guide

Buy it if

You are on AM4 already and want PCIe 4.0 for a Gen 4 NVMe drive and graphics card, four DDR4 slots with an ECC option, and a solid 5+3 phase VRM for a Ryzen 5000 CPU, in a micro ATX board.

Skip it if

You are building new and want the AM5 platform with DDR5, you need Wi-Fi or a rear USB Type-C port, or you want two fast M.2 slots rather than one Gen 4 and one PCIe 3.0 x2.

Also consider

The GIGABYTE B650M D3HP AX if you are moving to AM5 but still want four memory slots, or a cheaper A520 micro ATX board if PCIe 4.0 is not needed.
