External hard drives for backing up computers, storing photo and video archives and moving large files at a low cost per terabyte: pocket-size portable drives powered by USB, larger desktop drives with their own power adapter, and rugged drives for travel and field work. From Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, LaCie, Transcend, Intenso and Verbatim.
How to choose
- Portable or desktop. Portable drives need only a USB cable; desktop drives offer more capacity but need mains power.
- Backup. Use backup software or Time Machine to copy files automatically, and keep a second copy elsewhere.
- Speed. For video editing directly from the drive, an external SSD is much faster.
- Power. Cyprus uses UK three-pin sockets. If a power adapter comes with a European plug, use a UK plug or cable rather than a travel adapter; ask us if you need one.
