The UltraLight XL is the large model in Herlitz's ultralight satchel line, and the whole point is the weight: 22 litres of volume in a body that weighs under 800 grams empty. The "Plus" version is a four-piece set - the satchel plus a two-flap pencil case, an oval slip-in pencil pouch and a matching drawstring sports sac - with two swappable velcro appliqués so a child can change the look without changing the bag. This one is the Lucky Horse design.
Compatibility — check before buying:
This is a school satchel, not a laptop bag. Herlitz publishes no laptop compartment, no tablet compartment and no padded device sleeve for the UltraLight XL - the compartment list is a roomy main compartment with a book pouch, a large front pocket and two elasticated side pockets. If you are looking for something to carry a laptop or tablet to school, this is not it, and we would rather say so here than let you find out after delivery. Note also that the pencil case in this set is supplied empty, so pens and pencils are a separate purchase.

Orafol reflective material
High-reflective Orafol material on the front, the sides and the shoulder straps, with an additional reflector built into the click-lock closure - which is the part that faces traffic when a child is walking with the bag on.
Tear-resistant polyester with Protect Effect
A tear-resistant polyester shell with a water-repellent impregnation Herlitz brands Protect Effect. It sheds rain; it is not waterproof and no rating is published.
Stable base with plastic feet
A reinforced base plate with plastic feet, so the satchel stands up on its own and the fabric is not sitting directly on wet ground.
Ergonomic back padding and chest strap
An ergonomically shaped, breathable back pad, padded adjustable shoulder straps and a height-adjustable chest strap to stop the straps sliding off small shoulders.

Two things worth knowing. First, the litre figures across the Herlitz range are easy to mix up, and retailers do mix them up constantly - 16, 17, 18, 19, 21 and 22 litres all belong to different Herlitz lines. This is the XL, so 22 litres. Second, the DIN 58124 claim: you will find retailer listings that attach it to this set, sometimes alongside dimensions that actually belong to the FiloActive. Herlitz names DIN 58124 only on the FiloActive DIN page. What this satchel genuinely has is Orafol high-reflective material on three surfaces plus a reflector in the buckle, which is meaningful for visibility on a dark morning - we simply will not label it with a standard the manufacturer does not claim. On the practical side, the empty weight is the real story: under 800 grams for a 22-litre bag is a difference a child notices every day.

Skip it if you specifically require DIN 58124 certification, because Herlitz does not claim that standard for the UltraLight XL; it claims it only for the FiloActive DIN line. And skip it if you need a stepless height-adjustable back system, which belongs to the FiloActive models, or a hip belt, which Herlitz does not publish for this satchel.
