HPE option 861678-B21 is a 4 TB midline server hard drive: 3.5-inch large form factor, SATA at 6 Gb/s, 7,200 rpm, in an HPE SmartCarrier ready for a ProLiant LFF hot-plug bay. Midline — HPE later renamed the class Business Critical — means the drive is built for capacity rather than for constant random I/O: backup targets, archives, media stores, log and surveillance retention, and the bulk tier under a faster cache. HPE’s corresponding spare part number for the same drive is 862127-001.
Compatibility — check before buying:
This drive is rated for low-duty-cycle work, and its warranty says so. HPE writes the term into the SKU name itself: 1YR WTY, a one-year drive warranty, which is materially shorter than the three years on HPE’s enterprise-class drives. That is a deliberate attribute of the midline class, not a mistake — these drives are specified for backup and archive duty, not for 24/7 random I/O. Plan the array accordingly. SmartCarrier, not Basic Carrier: the SC design serves ProLiant Gen8 through Gen10, and the BC carrier used by Gen10 Plus and Gen11 is not interchangeable in either direction. HPE publishes no supported-server list for this part, and the SKU no longer appears in the current HPE Hard Disk Drives QuickSpecs, so treat it as a superseded part number — send us your server model and generation and we will confirm with the distributor first. Midline drives are excellent value as long as they are used for what they are: bulk capacity that is written once and read occasionally. The one-year warranty is HPE being explicit about that, and it is the number to read before the price. If the plan is a backup repository, a media store or the capacity tier under something faster, this is exactly the right drive and 4 TB in a 3.5-inch bay is cheap storage. If the plan is a busy datastore, the drive will do it and the warranty will tell you how HPE feels about that. Check the carrier generation before ordering, because SC and BC are mechanically incompatible. Buy it if
Your ProLiant is a Gen8, Gen9 or Gen10 with LFF hot-plug bays, you need 4 TB of low-cost capacity for backup, archive or media, and you have confirmed the SmartCarrier fit with us.
Skip it if
Your server is Gen10 Plus or Gen11 — those need Basic Carrier drives. The workload is constant random I/O, where the midline duty rating and one-year term are the wrong fit. Or you need SAS, which is the 872487-B21.
Also consider
HPE 872487-B21 for the SAS 12G version of the same capacity, or an enterprise-class 10K SAS drive if the workload is busier than backup and archive.
