HP 712w 64 GB — Sliding Capless Drive at 120 MB/s, in Light Blue
64 GBUp to 120 MB/s readSliding capless, key loopLight Blue
The HP 712w is a 64 GB USB 3.2 Gen 1 flash drive with a sliding capless connector and an integrated key loop. HP licenses its name for these drives rather than making them: PNY Technologies manufactures, publishes the specification and provides the warranty. PNY rates it at up to 120 MB/s read.
Compatibility — check before buying:
This part number is the light blue one. PNY encodes the colour in the code: HPFD712LB-A-64 is Light Blue, while HPFD712B-A-64 is the black version. Two letters apart, same drive. If you were expecting black, that is a different part number and we can supply it. This is a USB Type-A drive, so it needs an adapter to reach a phone and none is supplied. Two further points. PNY publishes no write speed, no dimensions, no weight and no materials for the 712w — there is no datasheet PDF for this model, only the product page — so those lines stay empty here rather than being filled from a reseller. And beware the neighbours: PNY’s HP-branded range also includes the 819w, published at the same 120 MB/s in a near-identical sliding capless Type-A body, and the x911w, which is a solid-state drive in a different performance class entirely despite the similar naming. Note also that the x796w in the same range is published at only 70 MB/s in Europe — do not assume HP-branded drives share a speed.
Best For
✓ Everyday transport of documents, photographs and installers
✓ Keyring carry — the loop is integrated into the body
✓ Anyone who has lost a cap and wants a slider instead
✓ Telling drives apart at a glance where several circulate in one office
✓ Machines and laptops with USB-A ports
✓ Buyers who like the HP name on office equipment
Key Features
Sliding capless design
The connector slides out of the body for use and retracts afterwards. Nothing detaches, so there is no cap to lose.
Integrated key loop
PNY builds a loop into the housing rather than adding one on, which is what keeps a small drive attached to something you will not misplace.
Up to 120 MB/s read
Published by PNY for the 712w, and considerably quicker than the 70 MB/s of the x796w in the same HP-branded range. Comfortable for documents, photographs and video playback.
Light blue, and that is useful
Colour is encoded in the part number here rather than left to chance. Where several drives share a drawer, being able to say “the blue one” saves more time than it should.

Singular Expert Insight
PNY’s HP-branded range is more varied than the badge suggests, and the 712w sits at the sensible end of it: 120 MB/s read is genuinely useful, the slider removes the cap problem, and the integrated key loop is the detail that keeps a drive in your life rather than in a bin bag. Two honest limits. PNY publishes almost nothing physical about this model — no dimensions, no weight, no materials, no write speed — because there is no datasheet, only a web page. And the two-year term is shorter than the five that Kingston, SanDisk, Transcend and Silicon Power publish across our USB flash drives range. Neither is a reason not to buy it; both are worth knowing first. For moving very large folders regularly, an external SSD will save you more time than any stick.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You want a 64 GB USB-A stick at a useful 120 MB/s with a slider and a key loop, and you want the light blue one rather than another black drive in the drawer.
Skip it if
You expected black — that is HPFD712B-A-64. Or you need published dimensions, a write speed, or a manufacturer term longer than two years.
Also consider
HPFD712B-A-64 for the black version of this exact drive. HP x796w if price matters more than speed, at 70 MB/s. A Kingston or SanDisk model if you want a five-year manufacturer term.
