HPE P40503-B21 — 960 GB SATA Mixed Use SFF SSD
960 GB, 3.0 DWPD5,256 TB writtenSATA 6 Gb/s, 7 mmBasic Carrier, Gen10 Plus / Gen11
HPE option P40503-B21 is a 960 GB mixed use server SSD: 2.5-inch small form factor, SATA at 6 Gb/s, 7 mm tall, in an HPE Basic Carrier for ProLiant Gen10 Plus and Gen11 hot-plug bays. Mixed use is the endurance class for workloads that write as well as read — databases, virtualisation datastores, logging, write caches and general-purpose server volumes. HPE rates it at 3.0 drive writes per day with a lifetime allowance of 5,256 TB, which is nearly four times the write budget of the read-intensive drive of the same capacity.
Compatibility — check before buying:
The endurance class is the reason to buy this drive, and the reason not to confuse it with its neighbours. The read-intensive P40498-B21 is also 960 GB, also SATA, also 7 mm, also Basic Carrier — and rated 0.8 DWPD with 700 TB instead of 3.0 DWPD with 5,256 TB. The descriptions read almost identically; the write budgets differ by a factor of seven. If the workload writes constantly, this is the correct part and the other one will run out of warranty cover long before three years. On the physical side: Basic Carrier (BC) belongs to ProLiant Gen10 Plus and Gen11, and is mechanically incompatible with the SmartCarrier used by Gen8 through Gen10. HPE publishes generation-level support only and no complete server model list — send us the exact model and we will check. Finally, this is a Multi Vendor SKU: HPE qualifies drives from several manufacturers under one part number and guarantees the published performance rather than a specific model, and the warranty ends early if the 5,256 TB write allowance is reached.
Best For
✓ Databases and transactional workloads on Gen10 Plus and Gen11
✓ Virtualisation datastores with constant write activity
✓ Write caches and logging targets
✓ Virtual desktop infrastructure with heavy write patterns
✓ Replacing read-intensive drives that are consuming their write budget
✓ General-purpose server volumes where the write rate is unknown
Key Features
Three drive writes per day, and 5,256 TB
This is the number that separates mixed use from read intensive. 3.0 DWPD on a 960 GB drive is roughly 2.8 TB of writes per day sustained across the warranty period, against about 380 GB for the read-intensive equivalent. For a busy datastore or a database that is the difference between a drive that lasts and a warranty that lapses.
Balanced performance, published by HPE
61,000 random 4 KiB read IOPS and 31,000 random write IOPS at queue depth 16, rising to 72,000 read at deeper queues, with 516 MiB/s sequential read and 480 MiB/s sequential write. Write performance is where mixed-use drives pull ahead, and these are HPE’s figures rather than a vendor estimate.
Basic Carrier, 7 mm, ready to fit
The drive arrives in the BC carrier that Gen10 Plus and Gen11 bays expect, at the standard 7 mm Z-height, so it drops into an SFF bay without adapters and hot-plugs with front-panel indicators working. The matching HPE spare part number is P41528-001.

Singular Expert Insight
The most expensive mistake in server flash is buying the wrong endurance class, and it is easy to make here because HPE’s 960 GB SATA read-intensive and mixed-use drives look identical in a line of text. The practical test is simple: if the array is doing real work — a database, a busy datastore, anything that logs — the mixed-use drive is the one to specify, and the extra cost buys about seven times the write budget. If the drives are for boot volumes and read-mostly data, the read-intensive part is cheaper for the same result. Work out the daily writes first, then check the carrier generation, and the choice makes itself. Our enterprise SSDs range covers both classes side by side, and enterprise hard drives covers the capacity tiers below them.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
Your server is a ProLiant Gen10 Plus or Gen11 with SFF Basic Carrier bays and the workload writes as well as reads — a database, a datastore, a logging target or a write cache.
Skip it if
Your server is Gen8 to Gen10 — those need SmartCarrier drives. The workload is read-mostly, where the cheaper P40498-B21 is the right class. Or your bays are SAS-only.
Also consider
HPE P40504-B21 for 1.92 TB in the same mixed-use class, P40498-B21 for the read-intensive 960 GB drive, or P40506-B21 if the backplane is SAS.
