i-tec U3HUB448 — four 5 Gbps ports in a metal body, adapter in the box

4 x USB-A at 5 Gbps5 V / 2 A adapter includedMetal housing, 70 gTwo-year i-tec warranty

The i-tec U3HUB448 is a 112 mm metal bar that adds four USB-A ports at up to 5 Gbps to any computer with a spare USB port. What separates it from the usual four-port hub is that i-tec includes a 5 V / 2 A adapter: run it bus-powered when you are travelling, then plug the supply in at the desk when you are backing up or connecting something that draws real current. Surge and overcurrent protection are built in, and the hub detects a charging device automatically.

Compatibility — check before buying:
The host plug is USB-A on a fixed 28 cm cable — it is not detachable, and a laptop with only USB-C needs an adapter you supply. All four ports are ordinary data ports: this model has no dedicated BC 1.2 fast-charge port, so a tablet that demands one will not charge quickly here. That is the difference from the i-tec U3HUB445, which has one. There is no Power Delivery, so the hub cannot charge your notebook, and i-tec does not publish per-port current limits or whether charging continues with the computer switched off.

Best For

✓ Desktops and laptops that need four more USB ports
✓ Backups and data transfers where power matters
✓ Flash drives, card readers and printers
✓ Travel, where the adapter can stay at home
✓ Desks that want metal rather than plastic
✓ Anyone who wants the supply included, not extra

Key Features

Powered when it needs to be
The 5 V / 2 A adapter is in the box but not compulsory: the hub runs bus-powered for travel and takes mains power at the desk for backups and higher-draw devices. Most four-port hubs offer one mode or the other.

Metal, not plastic
i-tec builds this one in metal for durability and heat dissipation — 112 x 37 x 18 mm and 70 g, heavy enough to stay put with four cables attached.

Protected against the bad day
Built-in surge and overcurrent protection sits between a misbehaving device and the computer, which is exactly what an unprotected hub does not do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to use the power adapter?
No, and that is the useful part. The hub runs bus-powered from the computer for everyday peripherals, so the adapter can stay on the desk when you travel. Plug it in when you are copying to an external drive, running several devices at once, or charging something — i-tec positions the supply for exactly those cases. Without it, everything the four ports hand out comes from one host USB port.
How is this different from the i-tec U3HUB445?
Three things. The U3HUB448 has a fixed 28 cm USB-A cable and a metal body; the U3HUB445 has a USB-B socket with a detachable 90 cm A-to-B cable, so the lead can be replaced or lengthened. More importantly, the 445 has one BC 1.2 fast-charge port, marked by the LED, which is the only port that will charge an iPad or a Samsung tablet properly — the 448 has no BC 1.2 port at all. Both include the same 5 V / 2 A supply.
Can it charge my laptop?
No. There is no Power Delivery on this hub and no way to pass power back to the computer — the adapter feeds the hub and its four ports only. If you want a hub that charges the notebook through the same cable, you need a USB-C model with a PD pass-through socket. Tell us your laptop and its charger wattage and we will match one.
Singular Expert Insight
Four-port hubs divide neatly into bus-powered travel hubs and mains-powered desk hubs, and the U3HUB448 refuses to choose — the adapter is included but optional, which is genuinely the most useful arrangement if the hub moves between a bag and a desk. Within our USB hub range it sits above the plain bus-powered models on build (metal, surge protection) and below the seven- and ten-port units on capacity. The one specification to check against your own needs is charging: there is no BC 1.2 port here, so tablets that insist on one want the i-tec U3HUB445 instead. And if you are connecting external hard drives that come with their own mains adapter, use it — a 10 W supply across four ports is for peripherals, not for spinning disks.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You need four fast ports and want the power adapter included rather than sold separately. The hub will travel sometimes and sit on a desk the rest of the time. You want a metal housing with surge and overcurrent protection.

Skip it if

You need a BC 1.2 fast-charge port for a tablet — that is the U3HUB445. Your laptop has only USB-C, since the plug here is USB-A and no adapter is included. You want the hub to charge the notebook.

Also consider

i-tec U3HUB445 if you need a fast-charge port and a longer, replaceable cable. A USB-C hub if your machine has no full-size USB port. A seven-port powered hub if four sockets will not be enough.
