The ICY DOCK EZConvert Lite MB882SP-1S-3B is an open-air mounting kit that carries one 2.5-inch drive into an internal 3.5-inch bay. Rather than enclosing the drive in a plastic box, it holds it in a light ABS frame that leaves both faces exposed to whatever airflow the chassis already has. Two things separate it from the enclosed converters in the same family: it accepts drives up to 15 mm thick, which is the height class used by high-capacity 2.5-inch enterprise disks, and at 91.5 g it is the lightest of the group. Electrically it does nothing at all — the drive keeps its own 22-pin SATA edge connector in the position a 3.5-inch drive would put it, so the host sees the real drive and hot-swap behaves normally.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Three things decide whether this is the right part. First, drive height: this model takes 5–15 mm, while the enclosed MB882SP-1S-1B and -2B in the same family are rated to 12.5 mm and will not close over a thick enterprise drive. Second, PWDIS: ICY DOCK states that this converter does not support the SATA 3.3 / SAS 3.0 Power Disable feature, and a drive with PWDIS on pin 3 will not spin up in it — that is a hard incompatibility, not a performance note, and it affects many recent enterprise HDDs. Third, SAS: single-channel SAS is supported mechanically and electrically, but a SAS drive still needs a SAS host controller; it will not work from a plain motherboard SATA port. One naming point worth knowing: ICY DOCK’s own name for this part is EZConvert Lite; the similarly named MB482SP-3B EZConvert Air Lite is a different product. The enclosed converters in this family stop at 12.5 mm. This one is rated 5–15 mm, which covers the tall 2.5-inch enterprise HDDs, and because the frame is open rather than boxed the drive sits in the chassis airflow instead of inside a sealed plastic shell. For a drive that runs warm, that is worth more than the extra grams of a metal body.
Nothing in the signal path
There is no bridge chip. The drive keeps its own 22-pin SATA connector — 7-pin data plus 15-pin power — and the frame simply positions it where a 3.5-inch drive would sit. SATA runs at up to 6 Gbps and single-channel SAS at up to 24 Gbps on a SAS host, in both cases limited by the drive and the controller rather than by the adapter.
Light, and hot-swap capable
At 91.5 g in ABS this is the lightest converter in the EZConvert range, which matters when you are filling a chassis with a dozen of them. Because the connector lands in the 3.5-inch position, a 3.5-inch hot-swap backplane mates with it and swapping works exactly as it would with a native 3.5-inch drive. Six mounting screws are supplied.
