The ICY BOX IB-RD2253-C31 from RaidSonic is a compact external enclosure that turns two 2.5-inch SATA drives into a single USB volume, with hardware RAID built in. Four modes are available — RAID 1 mirrors the two drives, RAID 0 stripes them for speed, LARGE joins them into one big volume, and SINGLE presents them as two separate disks — and the mode is chosen with two switches on the back rather than in software, so the computer sees the result without any driver. The host connection is USB 3.2 Gen 2 at up to 10 Gbit/s over USB-C, and both a USB-C and a USB-A cable are supplied so it works with a modern laptop or an older desktop out of the box.
Compatibility — check before buying:
This takes 2.5-inch SATA drives — not M.2 and not NVMe. If you are shopping for a dual-M.2 NVMe RAID box, this is the wrong product. Maximum drive height is 9.5 mm. The big operational warning is about changing RAID mode: after moving the switches you press RESET, and that erases everything on both drives — the array has to be re-initialised and formatted afterwards. Decide the mode before you put data on it. Also worth being blunt about RAID 0: it doubles the throughput and doubles the risk, because losing either drive loses the whole volume, and it is not a backup. RAID 1 is the mode most people actually want here. The enclosure is not bus-powered — the supplied 5 V / 2 A adapter must be connected. Drives are not included. Ten gigabit over USB-C, with both cables
The host link is USB 3.2 Gen 2 at up to 10 Gbit/s with UASP, through a USB-C port. RaidSonic supplies a USB-C cable and a USB-A cable, so the same enclosure connects to a current laptop or to an older machine without a second purchase. Windows, macOS and ChromeOS are supported, plug and play.
Small, silent and aluminium
The body is aluminium and plastic, 130 × 84 × 26 mm and 187 g, with no fan — it cools passively, so there is nothing to hear on a desk. Drives are screwed in, and a screw set with a screwdriver is in the box along with the 5 V power adapter.

RAID 1 with two identical drives is what most people should choose: you keep working when a drive dies, and the enclosure tells you which one to replace. RAID 0 is genuinely faster and genuinely riskier — one drive lost means everything lost — so it belongs on scratch data you can regenerate, not on the only copy of a project. LARGE is the pragmatic choice when you have two mismatched drives and just want the space. Whichever you pick, the mode change wipes both drives, so decide once.
