The ICY DOCK ICYNano MB861U31-1M2B turns a single M.2 NVMe SSD into a fast portable USB-C drive for IT technicians, creators and anyone reusing an SSD after an upgrade: it connects over USB 3.2 Gen 2 at up to 10Gbps and takes every common M.2 length from 2230 up to 22110.

Installation needs no screwdriver — a patent-pending adjustable drive locker holds the SSD — and the aluminium lid doubles as a heatsink with the supplied thermal pad. It is bus-powered, Thunderbolt 4 compatible and comes with both USB-C to C and USB-C to A cables.

Before you order: NVMe (PCIe) M.2 SSDs only. M.2 SATA SSDs will not be recognised in this enclosure. The SSD is not included.

  • A brand-new SSD must be initialised and formatted before Windows or macOS shows it.

What Will Not Work

  • M.2 SATA SSDs (B-key SATA drives) — the JMS583 bridge is NVMe-only.
  • Speeds above 10Gbps — even on Thunderbolt 4 or USB4 ports it runs at USB 3.2 Gen 2 speed.
  • Drives longer than 110 mm or double-sided drives with tall heatsinks.
  • Using the SSD without formatting — new drives must be initialised first.

Will my SSD fit?
If it is an M.2 NVMe (PCIe) SSD between 30 mm and 110 mm long, yes. Send us the SSD model if you are unsure whether it is NVMe or SATA.
How fast will it be?
Up to the 10Gbps limit of USB 3.2 Gen 2 — typically around 1,000 MB/s with a good NVMe SSD on a 10Gbps port.
Do I need tools?
No. The lid and drive locker are tool-less; just add the thermal pad on top of the SSD.
Why does Windows not show my new SSD?
A new SSD has no partition yet. Initialise and format it in Disk Management (Windows) or Disk Utility (macOS).
