The ICY BOX IB-166SSK-B is a tray-less mobile rack: a bare 3.5-inch hard disk slides straight into one external 5.25-inch bay with no caddy, no screws and no tools. RaidSonic builds it from aluminium and stainless steel, rates the internal No-Scratch SATA connector for more than 50,000 drive exchanges, and lists both SAS and SATA III drives. Of the three tray-less ICY BOX racks in this size, it is the one that ships with the SATA data cable already in the box.
Compatibility — check before buying:
You need a free external 5.25-inch bay, which many modern cases no longer have. It takes 3.5-inch drives only — a 2.5-inch SSD needs a converter bracket that is not included. No drive is included. The rack’s host connector is a single SATA III 6 Gbit/s port with a 15-pin SATA power input: RaidSonic lists SAS drives as compatible, but a SAS disk still requires a SAS host controller in the machine — the rack does not convert one to the other. RaidSonic does not publish a maximum drive height for this model, so if your disk is an unusually thick enterprise unit, tell us the exact model and we will check it.

RaidSonic includes a SATA data cable with security clips, two keys and four screws. Neither of the other two tray-less ICY BOX 5.25-inch racks includes the data cable — a small thing that stops the install at the last step if you have not got a spare lead.

IB-166SSK-B is aluminium and steel, lists SAS as well as SATA, and is the only one of the three with the SATA cable in the box. You swap bare 3.5-inch disks often, you have a free 5.25-inch bay, and you want a metal rack that comes with its cable and a key lock. It is the one in this trio that lists SAS drives.
Skip it if
Your case has no 5.25-inch bay, your drives are 2.5-inch, or you need the disk to travel in a sealed carrier. A SAS disk without a SAS controller in the machine will still not work.
