ICY BOX IB-166SSK-B — Push a Bare 3.5" Disk Straight In, No Tray
1× 3.5" SAS or SATA HDDTray-less — no screws, no caddyFits one 5.25" bayAluminium and steel · key lock
The ICY BOX IB-166SSK-B is a tray-less mobile rack: a bare 3.5-inch hard disk slides straight into one external 5.25-inch bay with no caddy, no screws and no tools. RaidSonic builds it from aluminium and stainless steel, rates the internal No-Scratch SATA connector for more than 50,000 drive exchanges, and lists both SAS and SATA III drives. Of the three tray-less ICY BOX racks in this size, it is the one that ships with the SATA data cable already in the box.
Compatibility — check before buying:
You need a free external 5.25-inch bay, which many modern cases no longer have. It takes 3.5-inch drives only — a 2.5-inch SSD needs a converter bracket that is not included. No drive is included. The rack’s host connector is a single SATA III 6 Gbit/s port with a 15-pin SATA power input: RaidSonic lists SAS drives as compatible, but a SAS disk still requires a SAS host controller in the machine — the rack does not convert one to the other. RaidSonic does not publish a maximum drive height for this model, so if your disk is an unusually thick enterprise unit, tell us the exact model and we will check it.
Best For
✓ Bench and workshop machines that test drives daily
✓ Backup rotation where speed of swapping matters
✓ Data recovery and forensics work
✓ Servers and workstations with a SAS controller fitted
✓ Cases that still have a free 5.25" bay
✓ Anyone tired of screwing disks into caddies
Key Features
Tray-less Easy Swap
The disk goes in bare. No caddy to buy, no caddy to lose, and nothing to unscrew when it comes back out — which is the whole point if you handle several drives a day rather than one a month.
A connector rated for 50,000 swaps
The internal No-Scratch SATA connector is rated by RaidSonic for more than 50,000 hot swaps. On a rack that will be used constantly, that figure is the specification that decides whether it lasts a year or a decade.
The cable is in the box
RaidSonic includes a SATA data cable with security clips, two keys and four screws. Neither of the other two tray-less ICY BOX 5.25-inch racks includes the data cable — a small thing that stops the install at the last step if you have not got a spare lead.

Singular Expert Insight
The three tray-less ICY BOX racks for a 5.25-inch bay look almost identical and differ in ways that decide the purchase. IB-166SSK-B is aluminium and steel, lists SAS as well as SATA, and is the only one of the three with the SATA cable in the box. IB-158SSK-B is full aluminium with a connector for an optional extra fan, but ships no cable and no manual — just the rack, two keys and eight screws. IB-168SK-B is stainless steel and plastic, the cheapest of the three, also with no cable. If the disks are SAS, this is the only one of the three to consider. If you would rather screw the drive into a carrier that can be sealed and carried off site, the enclosure route or the IB-138SK-B-II suits that better. Fill it from our desktop and laptop hard drives or enterprise server hard drives.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You swap bare 3.5-inch disks often, you have a free 5.25-inch bay, and you want a metal rack that comes with its cable and a key lock. It is the one in this trio that lists SAS drives.
Skip it if
Your case has no 5.25-inch bay, your drives are 2.5-inch, or you need the disk to travel in a sealed carrier. A SAS disk without a SAS controller in the machine will still not work.
Also consider
The IB-158SSK-B is full aluminium with an optional fan connector, and the IB-168SK-B is the plainer steel-and-plastic version — neither includes a cable. The IB-138SK-B-II uses a lockable, sealable carrier instead.
