ICY DOCK MB840TP-B — Spare M.2 SSD Tray
30–110 mm M.2 modulesMetal carrier, 65 gToughArmor & ExpressSlotSpare part — needs a parent enclosure
The ICY DOCK MB840TP-B is a spare removable M.2 SSD tray for ICY DOCK’s ToughArmor and ExpressSlot M.2 enclosures. It is the metal carrier a module is fixed into before it slides into the parent unit, and it takes every common M.2 length — 30 mm through 110 mm, which covers 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110. Buy one per drive and swapping an SSD becomes a matter of pulling one tray and pushing another in, rather than opening the enclosure. Being a spare part, it has no electronics and does nothing on its own: the parent enclosure provides the connection.
Compatibility — check before buying:
This tray only works inside a compatible ICY DOCK M.2 enclosure. ICY DOCK lists it for the ToughArmor MB852, MB872 and MB873 series and the ExpressSlot MB840 and MB842 series. At model level ICY DOCK’s own guidance names the ExpressSlot MB840M2P-B and MB842MP-B, the ExpressSlot Elite MB840M5P-B and MB842M5P-B, the ToughArmor MB852M2PO-B and the ToughArmor MB873MP-B V2. A naming point that trips people up: the PCIe-slot products were renamed from ToughArmor to ExpressSlot and ExpressSlot Elite, while the bay-mounted units kept the ToughArmor name — the tray still carries the older series wording in its own title. Because the tray is a passive carrier it does not decide the interface: the parent unit does, and the family spans both NVMe and M.2 SATA hosts. ICY DOCK does not publish a maximum module thickness or a package contents list for this tray, so we state neither. Send us the model number of your enclosure and we will confirm the tray before you order.
Best For
✓ Adding spare trays so M.2 modules swap without opening the unit
✓ Replacing a tray lost or damaged during service
✓ Keeping a set of drives ready-mounted, one per tray
✓ Imaging and forensics benches where modules change constantly
✓ Mixed 2242, 2280 and 22110 module sets in one enclosure
✓ Filling every bay of a multi-slot M.2 enclosure
Key Features
Every M.2 length from 30 to 110 mm
ICY DOCK publishes 30 mm to 110 mm support, so the same tray takes 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 modules. That matters in a multi-bay M.2 enclosure where the drives are not all the same generation — one tray part number covers the whole mix.
Metal, not plastic
The tray is a metal structure at 134 × 39 × 7.5 mm and 65 g. In the ToughArmor and ExpressSlot enclosures the tray is also part of the thermal path, taking heat off the module and into the chassis, which a plastic caddy cannot do.
One tray per drive is the point
A removable-tray enclosure only saves time if every module already lives in its own tray. Otherwise each change means unscrewing the drive from the single tray that came in the box. Spare trays are what turn the enclosure into something you can actually swap in seconds.

ICY DOCK publishes no term on this tray’s own page. Its global policy gives 5 years for ToughArmor trays and 2 years for separately sold accessory trays, and does not say which applies here, so we quote no figure — ask us and we will confirm with the distributor. Singular’s direct warranty is 1 year; beyond that we assist you with the manufacturer’s warranty process for its full duration. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Which enclosures does this tray fit?
ICY DOCK lists the ToughArmor MB852, MB872 and MB873 series and the ExpressSlot MB840 and MB842 series. At model level that means MB840M2P-B, MB842MP-B, MB840M5P-B, MB842M5P-B, MB852M2PO-B and MB873MP-B V2. Send us the model printed on your enclosure and we will confirm it.
Will it take a 22110 module?
Yes. The published range is 30 mm to 110 mm, so 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 all mount in the same tray. That is useful in a multi-bay enclosure holding modules of different generations.
Is it for NVMe or for M.2 SATA drives?
Both, because the tray itself is passive and carries no electronics. What decides it is the parent enclosure — the PCIe-slot ExpressSlot units are NVMe, while the MB872 series is M.2 SATA. Check the enclosure, not the tray.
Can I use it with a different ICY DOCK tray family?
No. ICY DOCK’s M.2 trays, its 2.5-inch EZ-Slide trays and the tray for the MB720M2K-B are all different parts and none of them interchange. Match the tray to the enclosure model number rather than to what looks similar.
Singular Expert Insight
Spare trays are the accessory people wish they had ordered with the enclosure, and M.2 trays more than most: an M.2 module is held by a single tiny screw, so without a spare tray every drive change is a fiddly job with a magnetic screwdriver. One tray per module removes that entirely. The only real risk is the part number, because ICY DOCK renamed the PCIe-slot products from ToughArmor to ExpressSlot mid-life and the tray listing still uses the old wording — so match on the enclosure model number rather than on the series name. For the modules themselves, our
internal SSDs range covers the M.2 drives these enclosures are built for, and
storage accessories holds the rest of the mounting hardware.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You own an ICY DOCK ToughArmor MB852, MB872 or MB873, or an ExpressSlot MB840 or MB842, and want more trays than it shipped with or need to replace one.
Skip it if
Your enclosure is any other model, including the MB720M2K-B, which uses a different tray. Or you were looking for the enclosure itself rather than a spare carrier.
Also consider
The parent ExpressSlot or ToughArmor M.2 enclosure if you do not yet own one, or an M.2 heatsink if what you actually need is cooling for a module already installed on a motherboard.
