The Intel Ethernet SFP+ SR Optics (E10GSFPSR) is Intel’s short-reach multimode optic for its 10GbE SFP+ network adapters. It runs at either 10GBASE-SR or 1000BASE-SX at 850 nm over an LC duplex connection, reaching 300 m at 10G on OM3 fibre, with digital diagnostics. It is the optic to order when an Intel X520 or X710 adapter in a server needs a fibre link to the switch. In practice, multimode optics are the cheaper choice for links inside one building: most server rooms and floor risers already carry OM3 or OM4 fibre, and the module plus a short patch cord is all a port needs. Before you order, check the fibre grade printed on the cable jacket and the real length of the run, including patch panels.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Intel states that X520 and X710 adapters work only with Intel-branded SFP+ optics — the reason to buy this part. It is made for Intel adapters, not for switches. It needs multimode fibre. The E10GSFPSRX is the extended-temperature version and runs at 10G only, so choose this E10GSFPSR if you need 1G; the E10GSFPLR is the single-mode version. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
