The Intellinet 506724 is a Gigabit SFP transceiver for single-mode fibre, reaching up to 20 km at 1310 nm over an LC duplex connection. Intellinet presents it as equivalent to the Cisco GLC-LH-SM-20 and for use in Intellinet or any other MSA-compliant SFP switch, for links between buildings and sites. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It needs a duplex single-mode fibre pair (two strands) and a 1310 nm single-mode module at the far end — it will not work over multimode fibre or with an SX module, and it is not a BiDi optic. It is a 1G module. For single-strand links Intellinet sells BiDi pairs such as the 507486; the industrial 10 km version is 508568. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
