The Inter-Tech GD-25612 is an aluminium enclosure that turns one 2.5" SATA hard disk or SSD into a portable USB 3.0 drive (up to 5 Gbps). It is a simple way to reuse the drive from an old laptop, carry backups, or recover data from a disk taken out of a notebook.
The housing measures 13 x 78 x 132 mm, weighs about 75 g without a drive and takes drives up to 9.5 mm high and up to 16 TB. Power comes from the USB cable and two LEDs show power and drive activity. Inter-Tech lists support for Windows, macOS and Linux.
Before you order: Check your drive height: the GD-25612 takes 2.5" drives up to 9.5 mm. 12.5 mm and 15 mm high-capacity 2.5" disks do not fit.

What It Means in Practice
- A 2.5" hard disk in this enclosure runs at the disk's own speed; a SATA SSD will be limited by the USB 3.0 link (5 Gbps) but is still far faster than a hard disk.
- The drive is fixed with the included screws and screwdriver, so assembly takes a few minutes rather than being tool-less.
- No power adapter is needed — the USB cable powers the drive. Use a full-power USB 3.0 port; weak front-panel or hub ports can struggle with spinning hard disks.
- A new drive must be initialised and formatted before use; a drive from an old laptop keeps its data and can be browsed directly.
What Will Not Work
- 3.5" desktop hard disks — they need an enclosure with its own power supply.
- 2.5" drives taller than 9.5 mm.
- M.2, mSATA or U.2 SSDs.
- Speeds above USB 3.0 (5 Gbps).
- Computers with USB-C ports only, without a suitable adapter.
