Kingston Dual Portable SSD — 2TB Cable-Free USB-A and USB-C
USB-A and USB-C built inUSB 3.2 Gen 2, 10 Gbit/s13 gFive-year manufacturer term
The Kingston Dual Portable SSD is a 2TB pocket SSD with both connectors built into the body — a full-size USB Type-A at one end and a USB Type-C at the other. No cable is supplied because none is needed, which removes the single most annoying failure mode of a portable SSD: the drive is in your bag and the cable is not. The host link is USB 3.2 Gen 2 at 10 Gbit/s, Kingston publishes up to 1050 MB/s read and 950 MB/s write, and the whole thing weighs 13 g at 71.85 × 21.1 × 8.6 mm.
Compatibility — check before buying:
The speed figure covers every capacity. Kingston publishes 1050 MB/s read and 950 MB/s write as one rating for the whole Dual Portable SSD family — 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB — and does not break it down per capacity, so there is no 2TB-specific number to quote. Kingston also states plainly that a USB 3.2 Gen 2 host is required for optimal speeds: on a USB 3.0 or 3.1 Gen 1 port the drive works but at half the bandwidth, and on USB 2.0 far less. Two more points. Kingston publishes no IP rating, no drop rating and no encryption or bundled software for this drive, so we claim none — if the data needs protecting, use your operating system’s own encryption or ask us about a hardware-encrypted drive. And do not confuse this with Kingston’s XS1000 and XS2000 portable SSDs: those have a single USB-C port and need the supplied cable, where this one plugs straight into both port types.
Best For
✓ Working files that move between a desktop, a laptop and a tablet
✓ Photo and video offload in the field with no cable to carry
✓ Machines with a mix of USB-A and USB-C ports
✓ Travel storage that lives in a pocket rather than a case
✓ A fast scratch drive for editing and large transfers
✓ Replacing a portable SSD whose cable keeps going missing
Key Features
No cable, by design
Kingston calls it a cable-free design and that is exactly what it is: USB-A on one end, USB-C on the other, both part of the drive. Plug it into a tower PC, a modern laptop, a tablet or an Android phone with nothing in between. There is no cable in the box because the drive does not need one.
Ten gigabits, and 3D NAND behind it
USB 3.2 Gen 2 gives a 10 Gbit/s link and Kingston publishes up to 1050 MB/s read and 950 MB/s write on 3D NAND. That is roughly ten times what a good USB flash drive manages on sustained transfers — the difference between waiting for a video project to copy and getting on with something else.
Thirteen grams
71.85 × 21.1 × 8.6 mm and 13 g, in a metal and plastic body. It is small enough to leave in a laptop bag pocket and forget about, and light enough that it does not hang awkwardly out of a laptop port. Kingston backs it with a limited five-year warranty and free technical support.

Singular Expert Insight
Cable-free is a small idea that turns out to matter a lot. A portable SSD lives in a bag with other things, and the cable is the part that migrates to a different bag, a hotel room or a colleague’s desk — at which point an expensive drive is a paperweight. Building both plugs into the body removes that entirely, and at 13 g there is no real cost to it. What you give up is the ruggedness and the encryption that some rivals publish, and a per-capacity speed rating: Kingston quotes one figure for the range. For most people carrying working files that is the right trade. If the drive will be dropped, soaked or must be encrypted, our external SSDs range has models built for that, and USB flash drives covers the cheaper option for small volumes.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You move real amounts of data between machines with different port types, you want SSD speed rather than flash-drive speed, and never carrying a cable is worth more than a rugged rating.
Skip it if
You need encryption, an IP rating or a drop rating — Kingston publishes none for this drive. Your machines are USB 2.0. Or you would rather have a cabled drive that sits flat on a desk.
Also consider
Kingston XS1000 or XS2000 if you prefer a cabled portable SSD, the 512 GB or 2 TB Dual Portable SSD for a different capacity, or a hardware-encrypted portable SSD if the data is sensitive.
