Kingston DataTraveler Exodia M 256 GB — A Moving Cap That Cannot Be Lost
256 GBUSB 3.2 Gen 1Moving cap, not removable5-year Kingston warranty
The Kingston DataTraveler Exodia M is a 256 GB USB 3.2 Gen 1 flash drive whose cap slides along the body rather than pulling off, so it cannot be mislaid. At 256 GB it is the largest of the range, comes in black with a teal accent, weighs 10 g and carries a loop for a keyring. Kingston backs it with a five-year warranty and free technical support.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Two things to check before ordering. First, Kingston publishes no transfer speed for the Exodia M — not on its product pages, not in the datasheet, not in its own comparison chart, at any capacity. Sibling models in the same chart carry a 200 MB/s read figure and this row does not. Any MB/s number you see quoted for an Exodia M did not come from Kingston, and we will not print one. What is certain is the interface: USB 3.2 Gen 1, a 5 Gbit/s link, backwards compatible with USB 2.0. Second, the Exodia M and the plain Exodia are easy to confuse. Both are USB-A, both are USB 3.2 Gen 1, both come in the same capacities and both are black with a coloured accent. The difference that matters is the cap: the Exodia M’s moves along the body, the plain Exodia’s pulls off and can be lost. The colours are also inverted between them at each capacity, so matching by photograph will mislead you. Note finally that Kingston lists Windows 11 for this drive and does not list Windows 10.
Best For
✓ Carrying a large media or project library on a single stick
✓ Anyone who has lost a cap before — this one is attached to the body
✓ Keyring or bag carry, using the built-in loop
✓ Backing up a photo library or a documents folder to keep off-site
✓ Machines and consoles with USB-A ports that need a lot of storage
✓ Buyers who want a five-year manufacturer term on a large-capacity drive
Key Features
Moving cap
The cap travels along the body instead of coming off. It is the single most practical feature on a flash drive, because a lost cap means a bare connector for the rest of the drive’s life.
256 GB, the top of the range
Kingston builds the Exodia M in 64, 128 and 256 GB. This is the largest, and enough for a substantial photo library or a stack of video files in one place.
Loop for keyrings
A moulded loop lets the drive hang from keys or a lanyard rather than rolling loose in a bag.
Five-year Kingston warranty
Kingston applies a five-year warranty with free technical support to its DataTraveler drives, uniformly across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia and the Americas.

Singular Expert Insight
Kingston makes several drives that look alike, and the Exodia M earns its place through one detail: a cap that physically cannot be lost. Over a five-year warranty period that is worth more than a few MB/s. What you should go in knowing is that Kingston publishes no speed for this family at all — unusual, and the reason this page carries no number. If throughput is what you are comparing on, the Kingston Kyson and the microDuo 3C G3 both publish figures, and several other models in our USB flash drives range state read and write. At 256 GB, though, you are usually buying capacity and durability rather than speed, and on both counts this is a sensible drive. For a working library you open and edit rather than carry, an external SSD is the right class of product.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You want the largest Exodia M, a cap that cannot be lost, a keyring loop and a five-year Kingston term, and you are buying on capacity rather than on a printed speed.
Skip it if
You compare drives by published MB/s, because Kingston states none here. You need a USB-C connector. Or you specifically wanted the plain Exodia with its removable cap.
Also consider
Kingston DataTraveler Kyson if you want a published 200 MB/s read. Kingston DataTraveler microDuo 3C G3 for a dual USB-A and USB-C drive with a stated speed. An external SSD for a working library.
