Kingston DataTraveler Micro 256 GB — Plug-and-Stay Metal Drive

Up to 200 MB/s read24.95 mm longCapless metalBuilt-in key loop

The Kingston DataTraveler Micro (DTMC3G2/256GB) is a 256 GB USB 3.2 Gen 1 flash drive in a metal body less than 25 mm long. It is designed to be plugged into a laptop, a car stereo or a media player and left there — it barely protrudes — while still carrying a quarter of a terabyte and reading at up to 200 MB/s.

Compatibility — check before buying:
This is a USB Type-A drive, not a USB-C one. The name sounds like Kingston’s dual-connector model but it is not: the DataTraveler microDuo 3C is a different product with a different part number and a USB-C end. The Micro has one connector and it is full-size USB-A, so it will not plug into a phone. Kingston publishes a 200 MB/s read figure for the whole 64 GB to 256 GB range but no write speed at all, at any capacity, so we do not print one. If a published write figure matters, say so and we will point you at a Kingston drive that has one.

Best For

✓ Permanent extra storage in a laptop or tablet
✓ Music and media in a car stereo or head unit
✓ Smart TVs, consoles and media players
✓ A keyring drive that is genuinely tiny
✓ Machines where a full-size drive gets knocked out
✓ Anyone still running Windows 8.1 or an older macOS

Key Features

Under 25 mm long
24.95 x 12.2 x 4.5 mm. It sits close to flush with the port, so a laptop goes in and out of a bag with the drive still fitted and a car stereo does not have a stick protruding into the cabin. This is what Kingston means by plug-and-stay.

Built-in key loop
Kingston publishes a key loop as a specification rather than implying one in a photograph. On a drive this small that matters — without it, a 25 mm metal nub is exactly the kind of thing that disappears in a bag.

200 MB/s read
Kingston rates the DataTraveler Micro at up to 200 MB/s read across 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB, and the 256 GB parts entry carries the same figure. Video plays straight off the drive and a large folder copies across in a couple of minutes.

Wider system support than most
Windows 11, 10 and 8.1, macOS 10.14 or later, Linux 2.6.x or later and ChromeOS. That is a broader list than several newer Kingston drives, which is useful in an office with mixed machines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this plug into a phone?
No. The DataTraveler Micro has a single full-size USB Type-A connector. The name causes genuine confusion, because Kingston also sells the DataTraveler microDuo 3C, which is the dual USB-C and USB-A drive. If you want the phone-friendly one, that is the model to ask for — it is a different part number and we stock it.
How fast does it write?
Kingston does not publish a write figure for the DataTraveler Micro at any capacity, so we are not going to quote one. The 200 MB/s read figure is published and applies to this 256 GB model. If write speed is what your work depends on, the DataTraveler SE9 G3 publishes 100 MB/s write and the Kyson publishes 60 MB/s.
Will it stick out of my laptop?
Barely. At 24.95 mm long, most of which sits inside the port, it is one of the shortest full-capacity drives available. It is designed to stay in the machine, which is why the key loop is on the body rather than a separate ring.
Is it the same as the older DataTraveler Micro 3.1?
No. The older model uses a different part-number prefix and is a separate product. The part number on this listing is DTMC3G2/256GB. If you are replacing a drive you already own, match the part number rather than the name.
Singular Expert Insight
The DataTraveler Micro solves the problem of a drive that has to stay plugged in. Under 25 mm long, all metal, capless, with a key loop Kingston actually publishes, it turns a spare USB port into permanent storage without leaving something to snag or snap. At 256 GB with 200 MB/s read it is far more capable than the tiny drives usually are. Two caveats, and the first is the important one: the name is close enough to the microDuo 3C that people order this expecting a USB-C end, and there is none — this is USB-A only. The second is that Kingston publishes no write speed for the family at any capacity, so this is a drive to load and read from rather than one to rewrite constantly. Where it beats its siblings is compatibility: Windows 8.1 and macOS 10.14 are both on Kingston’s list, which the newer SE9 G3 cannot say.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You want a drive that lives permanently in a laptop, a car stereo or a media player without protruding, with 256 GB of space, 200 MB/s read and a published key loop.

Skip it if

You wanted a USB-C drive for a phone — that is the microDuo 3C, not this. Skip it too if you need a published write speed, or hardware encryption.

Also consider

Kingston DataTraveler microDuo 3C 256 GB if you need a USB-C connector for a phone or tablet. Kingston DataTraveler SE9 G3 256 GB for 220 / 100 MB/s with both figures published. SanDisk Ultra Fit three-pack if you need several plug-and-stay drives rather than one.
