Kingston IronKey Vault Privacy 50C — 512GB Encrypted USB-C Drive

512GB, 310/250 MB/sXTS-AES 256-bit hardwareAdmin, User and recovery passwordsIPX8, 5-year term

The Kingston IronKey Vault Privacy 50C is a 512GB encrypted USB-C flash drive that protects data with hardware XTS-AES 256-bit encryption, always on. You unlock it by entering a password into a small program that lives on the drive itself — nothing is installed on the computer and no administrator rights are needed. Kingston fits three credentials rather than one: an Admin password, a User password and a One-Time Recovery password, so a forgotten user password does not automatically mean lost data. Over USB 3.2 Gen 1 this capacity reads at up to 310 MB/s and writes at up to 250 MB/s. Kingston’s VP50C datasheet stops at 256 GB, so the 310/250 MB/s figure for this capacity comes from Kingston’s current product page rather than the datasheet — we tell you that rather than presenting it as datasheet-confirmed.

Compatibility — check before buying:
This is FIPS 197, not FIPS 140-3. The distinction matters if you are buying against a compliance requirement. FIPS 197 certifies the AES algorithm; it is not a module validation, and there is no NIST CMVP certificate for the Vault Privacy 50 series. If a tender, a government contract or a regulator’s policy asks for a FIPS 140-2 or FIPS 140-3 validated drive, this one will not satisfy it — the IronKey D500S (CMVP #5029) or the IronKey Keypad 200 series (CMVP #5133) will, and we can quote either. Connector: the 50C is USB-C only; the plain IronKey Vault Privacy 50 is the USB-A version, and the two part numbers differ by one character. Operating systems: Windows 11 and 10, and macOS 12 to 15. Linux is not supported. Ten wrong Admin passwords crypto-erase the drive, and if all passwords are lost there is no way back into the data.

Best For

✓ Carrying confidential client or personal data on USB-C laptops
✓ Organisations that want password recovery built into the drive
✓ Users who need encryption without installing anything
✓ Staff who work across Windows and macOS
✓ Replacing unencrypted flash drives after a data-protection review
✓ Journeys where the drive may get wet

Key Features

Three passwords, not one
Kingston gives the drive an Admin password, a User password and a One-Time Recovery password. In practice that means an administrator can reset a user who has forgotten theirs, and a user locked out can get back in once through recovery — instead of the drive being scrapped. Passwords can be Complex mode (6 to 16 characters, three of four character types) or Passphrase mode (10 to 64 characters).

Hardware encryption, always on
XTS-AES 256-bit runs on a dedicated controller inside the drive, so the encryption never depends on the host and cannot be turned off. Kingston publishes FIPS 197 certification for the algorithm and protects the firmware with digital signatures, which is what blocks BadUSB-style attacks.

Nothing to install
The unlocker lives on a small read-only partition on the drive itself — IronKey.exe on Windows, VP50.app on macOS — so there is no installer, no driver and no admin rights needed on the machine. The body measures 77.9 × 21.9 × 12.0 mm and is waterproof to IPX8, tested to four feet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this FIPS certified?
It carries FIPS 197, which certifies the AES algorithm. It does not have a FIPS 140-2 or FIPS 140-3 module validation and there is no NIST CMVP certificate for the Vault Privacy 50 series. If your requirement names FIPS 140, ask us for the IronKey D500S or the Keypad 200 instead — both are validated with certificate numbers we can quote.
What happens if someone forgets the password?
That is what the three-password design is for. An administrator can reset a user password, and a locked-out user can get back in once with the One-Time Recovery password. But if all passwords are lost there is no recovery, and ten consecutive wrong Admin passwords crypto-erase the drive deliberately.
Does it work on Linux?
No. Kingston publishes support for Windows 11 and 10 and macOS 12 to 15 only. If you need a Linux-capable encrypted drive, the IronKey D500S supports Linux kernel 4.4 and later with some feature limits, and a keypad drive such as the Keypad 200 works on anything with a USB port because it never touches the host.
What is the difference from the Vault Privacy 50?
The connector. The 50C is USB-C and the 50 is USB-A; the rest of the specification is the same series. One character in the part number, and the mistake is invisible until the drive will not plug in — tell us which ports the machines have and we will send the right one.
Singular Expert Insight
The Vault Privacy 50C is the sensible choice for encrypting everyday business data on modern USB-C machines, and the three-password design is genuinely better than the single-password drives it competes with — a forgotten password is an inconvenience rather than a loss. Where it is the wrong choice is compliance: FIPS 197 reads like FIPS 140 in a specification document and is not the same thing, and buyers have been caught by that at audit. If the requirement is written down, check whether it says 197 or 140 before ordering. Our USB flash drives range covers both the validated and non-validated encrypted models side by side, and for larger volumes of protected data the external SSDs section has encrypted portable drives.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You need everyday data encrypted on USB-C machines running Windows or macOS, you want password recovery built in, and your compliance requirement does not name FIPS 140.

Skip it if

Your requirement says FIPS 140-2 or FIPS 140-3 — this is FIPS 197. Your machines are Linux, or USB-A only. Or you need to unlock the drive on equipment with no operating system, which needs a keypad drive.

Also consider

Kingston IronKey Vault Privacy 50 in USB-A, the IronKey D500S if you need FIPS 140-3 Level 3 validation, or the IronKey Keypad 200C if the drive must unlock without any host software.
