Kingston IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 — 64 GB Hardware-Encrypted USB Drive
XTS-AES 256-bit hardware encryptionFIPS 197 certifiedAdmin and User passwordsBrute-force and BadUSB protection
The Kingston IronKey Locker+ 50 G2 (IKLP50G2/64GB) is a 64 GB USB Type-A flash drive that encrypts everything written to it with XTS-AES 256-bit, handled by the drive rather than by software on the computer. It is the entry point of Kingston’s IronKey range: a business drive for protecting client files, HR records and contracts that leave the office, at a price well below the certified models. Kingston rates it at 145 MB/s read and 115 MB/s write over USB 3.2 Gen 1.
Compatibility — check before buying:
Two things to check before you order. Kingston lists only Windows 11 and macOS 13.x to 26.x as supported systems for the G2. Windows 10 and Linux are not on that list — if your fleet still runs Windows 10, ask us before ordering rather than after. And this drive is FIPS 197 certified, not FIPS 140 validated. FIPS 197 certifies the AES algorithm; it is not the NIST CMVP module validation that public-sector and regulated tenders usually mean by “FIPS”. There is no CMVP certificate for the Locker+ 50 family — if a tender needs a certificate number, the IronKey Keypad 200 (CMVP #5133) or the IronKey D500S (CMVP #5029) are the drives to ask us about. This is also a USB Type-A drive and will not fit a USB-C-only laptop without an adapter. Kingston does not state what is in the box beyond the drive.
Best For
✓ Client and HR files leaving the office
✓ Small businesses with no encryption policy yet
✓ Handing files to an accountant or lawyer
✓ Replacing an unencrypted stick after a review
✓ Windows 11 and current macOS fleets
✓ A first encrypted drive without tender paperwork
Key Features
Encryption handled by the drive
XTS-AES 256-bit runs on the drive’s own controller, so the computer only ever sees an unlocked disk. There is no software licence to renew and no encryption product to deploy across machines.
Admin and User passwords
Kingston gives the G2 a multi-password option with both Complex and Passphrase modes. An Admin password means an IT manager can recover a user who has forgotten theirs, which is the difference between a lost password and lost data.
Brute force and BadUSB protection
Repeated wrong passwords are counted and acted on, and the firmware is protected against BadUSB-style attacks where a drive is reprogrammed to impersonate a keyboard.
145 MB/s read across the range
Kingston rates 32 GB through 256 GB identically at 145 MB/s read and 115 MB/s write, so the 64 GB is not a slower version of the bigger drives — it is the same drive with less space.

Singular Expert Insight
The Locker+ 50 G2 is the sensible first encrypted drive. Hardware XTS-AES 256, an Admin password for recovery, brute-force and BadUSB protection, a five-year Kingston warranty, and no software to deploy — for a business that simply wants client files protected when a laptop bag goes missing, it does the job at a fraction of what the certified models cost. Two things decide whether it is right for you, and both are easy to check. The operating-system list is unusually short: Windows 11 and current macOS only, with no Windows 10 and no Linux. And the certification is FIPS 197, the algorithm standard, not the FIPS 140 module validation an auditor looks for. Neither is a flaw in the drive; both are the reason it costs what it costs. If your answer to either is a problem, the Keypad 200 is where the certified tier starts and we will price it.
Buyer’s Guide
Buy it if
You want hardware encryption on Windows 11 or current macOS with an admin recovery password, and there is no tender or auditor asking for a FIPS certificate number.
Skip it if
Your machines run Windows 10 or Linux, which Kingston does not list for the G2, or you need FIPS 140-2 or 140-3 with a CMVP certificate number.
Also consider
IronKey Keypad 200 for FIPS 140-3 Level 3 with a keypad and no software at all, or IronKey Vault Privacy 50 for a wider Windows and macOS support list.
