LaCie Rugged Secure 2TB — STFR2000403 Encrypted Portable Drive

2TB USB-C, 5 Gb/sAES-256 Hardware Encryption1.2 m Drop Resistant2-Year Rescue Included

The LaCie STFR2000403 is a 2 TB Rugged Secure — the encrypted member of LaCie’s orange-bumpered Rugged family. Seagate lists it under part number STFR2000403; the EAN on this listing is 3660619403387. It combines AES-256 hardware encryption with a 1.2 metre drop rating and, unusually for this class of drive, a USB-C port that Seagate actually documents. It is bus-powered and ships with both a USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-A adapter cable. Two years of Rescue Data Recovery are included. Typically in stock with fast delivery across Cyprus.

Compatibility — check before buying:
Start with what this drive is: a hard drive, not an SSD. The Rugged Secure sits in a lineup alongside Rugged SSD and Rugged SSD Pro and is miscategorised constantly — LaCie’s datasheet and brochure both classify it as a hard drive. On the interface: it is USB-C, USB 3.1 Gen 1, 5 Gb/s. Several retailers list it as USB 3.1 Gen 2 or 10 Gb/s, which is wrong; the likely origin is that LaCie’s manual describes the supplied cable as a Gen 2 cable while the drive itself negotiates 5 Gb/s. On water resistance, LaCie’s own two documents disagree and we give both: the datasheet says rain-resistant with no IP rating, while the user manual states IP 52 — dust-protected, and water drops falling up to 15° from vertical. Neither says waterproof, and no LaCie document contains “IP54”. The crush figure needs a caveat too: “1-tonne car” appears in the datasheet only, with no test standard cited anywhere — treat it as a marketing figure rather than a certified rating. On the encryption: it is AES-256 in hardware, branded Seagate Secure, managed through the Toolkit app. Setup uses the factory SID, and recovery uses the PSID printed on a package insert and on stickers under the rubber bumper. A PSID reset wipes the drive. There is no data-preserving password recovery. Finally: the warranty on Rugged Secure is two years, not the longer term carried by some other Rugged models, and the Adobe Creative Cloud offer some listings advertise is not in LaCie’s box contents at all.

Best For

✓ carrying client work or sensitive files in a bag, where both loss and damage are real risks
✓ photographers and field crews who need encryption without a software container

Key Features

AES-256 hardware encryption, managed by Toolkit
The encryption engine is in the drive — this is a self-encrypting drive under Seagate Secure, the same mechanism used on Seagate’s One Touch with Password. The Toolkit app enables and manages it. Two practical points: the drive is set up against a factory SID, and the PSID reset code lives on a package insert and on stickers under the protective bumper — peel it back to find them. Keep both. A PSID reset returns the drive to a usable state but destroys all data in the process.

A documented USB-C port — rare in this category
LaCie publishes the connector, which is more than can be said for most external drives: it is USB-C, running USB 3.1 Gen 1 at 5 Gb/s, and compatible with USB 3.0, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3 ports. Both a USB-C cable and a USB-C to USB-A adapter cable are supplied, so it connects to older machines without buying anything. It is bus-powered.

Built to survive a bag: 1.2 m drop, rain-resistant, 100 g
The orange bumper is the point of the Rugged line. LaCie rates this drive for a 1.2 metre (4 ft) non-operating drop and describes it as rain-resistant; the user manual goes further and gives an IP 52 rating. It weighs 100 g in a 135 × 86 × 18.7 mm body. A 1-tonne car crush figure appears in the datasheet, though with no test standard behind it.

Manufacturer Term LaCie states a two-year limited warranty for Rugged Secure. Longer terms belong to other Rugged models such as the Rugged SSD Pro — do not assume five years here

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an SSD or a hard drive?
A hard drive. LaCie’s datasheet and brochure both classify Rugged Secure as an HDD, and it has moving parts. It is easy to assume otherwise because it sits in a product line next to the Rugged SSD and Rugged SSD Pro, and because the drop rating suggests solid-state. The 1.2 m drop rating is non-operating — that is, the drive survives being dropped, not being dropped while writing.
Is it waterproof?
No, and LaCie’s own two documents do not agree on how far it goes. The datasheet says only rain-resistant, with no IP rating. The user manual states IP 52, which means dust-protected and able to withstand water drops falling up to 15° from vertical — enough for rain, not for immersion. We publish both because both are LaCie documents. What you should not believe is any listing claiming “waterproof” or an IP54 rating: neither appears in any LaCie document.
What happens if I forget the password?
You lose the data. LaCie documents no data-preserving recovery path. The only route is a PSID reset, which returns the drive to factory state and destroys everything on it. The PSID code is printed on a package insert and on stickers under the rubber bumper — keep the insert, and know that the sticker is there. This is how a self-encrypting drive is supposed to behave; it is also why the password needs to live somewhere you trust.
What do I need to know before buying the STFR2000403?
Three things. First, the interface is USB 3.1 Gen 1 at 5 Gb/s, not Gen 2 at 10 Gb/s — several retailers get this wrong, and on a mechanical drive it makes no practical difference anyway, since the disc cannot saturate 5 Gb/s. Second, the warranty is two years, and two years of Rescue; the longer terms belong to other Rugged models, not this one. Third, the Adobe Creative Cloud offer that appears in some marketplace titles is not in LaCie’s box contents — the datasheet lists the drive, cables and a quick install guide only.
Singular Expert Insight
Rugged Secure is the right drive when the two risks you actually face are physical damage and someone reading the contents. It does both well: a real 1.2 m drop rating in a 100 g body, and genuine AES-256 hardware encryption rather than a software container. It is also one of the very few external drives whose connector Seagate or LaCie will state outright — USB-C, 5 Gb/s. The things to keep straight are that it is a hard drive rather than an SSD, that the water rating is modest and inconsistently documented, that the crush figure has no test standard behind it, and that both the warranty and the bundled Rescue run two years rather than the longer terms elsewhere in the Rugged range.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You carry work in a bag, the contents would matter if the bag went missing, and you would rather the drive survive being dropped than replace it. Encryption in hardware, USB-C, no adapter, no software container to maintain.

Skip it if

you need immersion protection — this is rain-resistant at best and LaCie’s own documents disagree on how far that goes. Skip it too if you cannot guarantee the password and PSID will be kept: a self-encrypting drive with a forgotten password is unrecoverable by design.

Also consider

LaCie Rugged USB-C is the same physical drive without encryption, and Rugged SSD and Rugged SSD Pro are the solid-state versions with much higher throughput and drop ratings. For encryption without the rugged casing, Seagate’s One Touch with Password uses the same AES-256 Seagate Secure mechanism at a lower price per terabyte.
