The LANCOM SFP-SR-MPO40 (article 60173) is a 40 Gbit QSFP+ transceiver for multimode fibre with an MPO connector, reaching up to 300 m at 850 nm. It is the short-reach 40G optic for LANCOM aggregation and core switches such as the XS-5116QF, XS-6128QF, CS-8132F and YS-7154CF, used for uplinks between switches in the same data room. In practice, multimode optics are the cheaper choice for links inside one building: most server rooms and floor risers already carry OM3 or OM4 fibre, and the module plus a short patch cord is all a port needs. Before you order, check the fibre grade printed on the cable jacket and the real length of the run, including patch panels.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It has an MPO connector, so a normal LC duplex patch cord will not fit. LANCOM states that a female-female MPO cable with polarity B is required and not included. It needs a QSFP+ port, or a QSFP28 port running at 40G. For 40G over single-mode LC fibre the SFP-LR-LC40 (60174) is the right part; the bulk ten-pack of this module is 60193. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
