Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 4 — The Top Configuration: Ultra 7, 24GB and Room for More

Copilot+ PC — Ultra 7 355, 49 TOPS24GB fitted, second slot free to 64GBTwo M.2 slots and Thunderbolt 4Aluminium body, 1.63 kg, 64 Wh

The Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 4 in this configuration is the strongest of the range: an eight-core Intel Core Ultra 7 355 reaching 4.7 GHz with a 49 TOPS neural engine, 24GB of DDR5 already fitted with a second slot free, and two M.2 drive slots. It sits in an aluminium body top and bottom at 1.63 kg, with a 400-nit matte WUXGA display, a 64 Wh battery, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, gigabit ethernet and Wi-Fi 7. It suits users who want the E Series price with none of the E Series compromises on performance or expansion.

Compatibility — check before buying:

???? Three different machine types are sold as “ThinkPad E16 Gen 4”. This is 21YC on Intel Panther Lake — eight cores, Copilot+, two memory slots to 64GB, two drive slots and Thunderbolt 4. 21YE is Intel Wildcat Lake with six cores, a 16 TOPS engine, one memory slot capped at 32GB and one drive slot. 21Y4 is AMD, with a 50 TOPS engine and the same two-plus-two expansion but four cores and USB4 instead of Thunderbolt. Check the part number before ordering. The panel is 45% NTSC, bright and matte at 400 nits with AICCP calibration but a narrow gamut — not for colour work. Each M.2 slot is capped at 1TB. There is no smart card reader, no SD reader and no mobile broadband, and the machine is Non-vPro.

Best For

✓ Users who want the fastest E Series configuration available

✓ Copilot+ features running locally on the 49 TOPS neural engine

✓ Spreadsheet and multi-window work on a 16-inch screen

✓ Fleet deployments that will add memory or storage later

✓ Desks equipped with Thunderbolt docks

✓ Offices with wired ethernet

Key Features

The fastest processor in the E Series

The Core Ultra 7 355 runs eight cores to 4.7 GHz with 12 MB of cache and a 49 TOPS neural engine — the highest Intel specification offered in this model, and comfortably past the Copilot+ threshold.

24GB fitted, and a slot still free

Unlike the single-slot Wildcat Lake version, this one has two DDR5-5600 SODIMM slots. The 24GB already fitted leaves the second slot open, so 64GB is reached by adding rather than replacing.

Two drive slots as well

The fitted 512GB drive sits in the M.2 2242 slot, leaving a full-length 2280 slot free for a second SSD of up to 1TB — the same expansion the Wildcat Lake version does not offer.

Light for 16 inches, and fully connected

1.63 kg in anodised aluminium, MIL-STD-810H tested, with two Thunderbolt 4 ports at 40 Gbps and DisplayPort 2.1, two USB-A, HDMI 2.1 at 4K/60, gigabit ethernet and Wi-Fi 7.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this differ from the Ultra 5 version of the same machine?

Processor and memory. This one has the Core Ultra 7 355 at 4.7 GHz with a 49 TOPS neural engine and 24GB fitted; the Ultra 5 325 version runs at 4.5 GHz with 47 TOPS and 16GB. Both are machine type 21YC with the same chassis, two memory slots, two drive slots, Thunderbolt 4 and warranty.

Three machines are called ThinkPad E16 Gen 4. Which is this?

This is machine type 21YC on Panther Lake — the strongest of the three. Machine type 21YE is Wildcat Lake with six cores, 16 TOPS, one memory slot and one drive slot. Machine type 21Y4 is AMD with a 50 TOPS engine and the same expansion, but four cores and USB4 instead of Thunderbolt. Order by part number.

Can I get to 64GB without throwing away the 24GB?

Yes. There are two SODIMM slots and only one is used, so a second module can be added alongside the fitted 24GB. That is the practical advantage of this machine type over the single-slot Wildcat Lake version, where any upgrade means replacing what is there.

Does it have a smart card reader?

No. Sign-in is by the fingerprint reader in the power button or the IR camera with Windows Hello. If your organisation requires smart card authentication, the ThinkPad T14 or L16 configurations have it.

Singular Expert Insight

This is the top of the ThinkPad E16 range and, for most office fleets, the most sensible machine in it. Eight cores at 4.7 GHz, a 49 TOPS Copilot+ engine, 24GB fitted with a slot still free, two drive bays, certified Thunderbolt 4 and 1.63 kg of aluminium — at E Series pricing. What it still is not is a T Series machine: the panel is 45% NTSC, there is no smart card reader, and it is Non-vPro. If your policy requires any of those, the difference is worth paying. If it does not, this configuration outperforms several more expensive ThinkPads in the range on cores, memory ceiling and expansion. Docks are in our docking station range and memory in our DDR5 SODIMM range.

Buyer’s Guide

Buy it if

You want the fastest ThinkPad E16 available — eight cores at 4.7 GHz, Copilot+ at 49 TOPS, 24GB fitted with a free slot and two drive bays — in a 1.63 kg aluminium body.

Skip it if

Your policy requires a smart card reader or Intel vPro, your work depends on colour accuracy, or you need more than 1TB per drive.

Also consider

ThinkPad E16 Gen 4 with the Ultra 5 325 and 16GB (21YC000ACY) as the lower-cost version of the same machine. ThinkPad E16 Gen 4 AMD (21Y4) for a 50 TOPS engine at four cores. ThinkPad L16 Gen 3 for a 16-inch machine with a smart card reader.
