The LevelOne SFP-9221 is a Gigabit BiDi SFP transceiver that runs a full-duplex link over one single-mode fibre: it transmits at 1310 nm and receives at 1550 nm through a simplex LC connector, up to 10 km. It is one half of a pair — the far end must be LevelOne’s SFP-9231, which uses the opposite wavelengths. In practice, BiDi optics are the answer when only one fibre strand is free between two buildings, or when leased dark fibre is charged per strand. Order both ends together, check the wavelengths are swapped, and use simplex single-mode LC cords.
Compatibility — check before buying:
You need one SFP-9221 and one SFP-9231: two SFP-9221 modules will not link, because both would transmit on 1310 nm. It uses a simplex LC connector on one single-mode strand — not a duplex patch cord, and not multimode fibre. It is a Gigabit optic; the 100 Mbps BiDi pair is SFP-7321 / SFP-7331. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Modules plug into a live port without shutting the switch down, so a link can be added or replaced during working hours. Seat it until it clicks and use the latch to remove it.
