The LevelOne SFP-3211 is a Gigabit SFP transceiver for single-mode fibre: 1000BASE-LX at 1310 nm over a duplex LC connection, up to 10 km on 9/125 µm fibre. It is the commercial-temperature LX module for links between buildings on LevelOne switches and media converters and on other MSA-compliant SFP ports. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs more than a few hundred metres: the 9/125 µm fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It needs two single-mode fibres and a 1000BASE-LX (1310 nm) module at the far end. It will not link to a single-strand BiDi module such as the SFP-9221, or run on multimode fibre (for that, see SFP-3001). It is a 1G optic, not for 10G-only SFP+ ports. Some LevelOne listings and file names mention 20 km; LevelOne’s datasheet for this model gives 10 km, which is what we publish. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure? Single-mode fibre, long reach
Built for single-mode (9/125 µm) fibre, the type used between buildings, floors and sites. It will not run over the orange or aqua multimode fibre found in many racks — the fibre type has to match at both ends.
