The LevelOne GVT-0300 is a Gigabit SFP transceiver for multimode fibre: 1000BASE-SX at 850 nm over a duplex LC connection, up to 550 m, with digital diagnostics and a 1 W draw. It is a commercial-temperature module for in-building and campus links on LevelOne switches, media converters and other MSA-compliant SFP ports. In practice, multimode optics are the cheaper choice for links inside one building: most server rooms and floor risers already carry multimode fibre, and the module plus a short LC patch cord is all a port needs. Before you order, check the fibre grade printed on the cable jacket and the real length of the run, including patch panels.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It needs multimode fibre and a 1000BASE-SX (850 nm) module at the far end; it will not link over single-mode fibre or to a 1310 nm LX module. The 550 m figure is for 50 µm fibre — older 62.5 µm OM1 runs reach less. It is a 1G optic and will not come up in a 10G-only SFP+ port. LevelOne’s SFP-3001 does the same job; the industrial SFP-4200 is for cabinets. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
