The LevelOne GVT-0301 is a Gigabit SFP transceiver of the 1000BASE-LX type, carrying 1.25 Gbps over 9/125 µm single-mode fibre up to 10 km at 1310 nm through a duplex LC connection, with digital diagnostics. It is LevelOne’s standard module for campus backbones and links between buildings, and it is built to the SFP MSA, so it is not tied to one switch brand. In practice, single-mode optics are the choice when a link leaves the building or runs several hundred metres: the OS2 fibre used by carriers and campus backbones carries the signal for kilometres with little loss. Before you order, confirm the fibre is single-mode at both ends and note the length and the number of patch panels on the way.
Compatibility — check before buying:
It needs single-mode fibre and a 1000BASE-LX module at the far end. It will not link to a 1550 nm ZX module such as LevelOne’s GVT-0302 (80 km), and it is a 1G module, so it does not run in a 10G-only SFP+ port. Keep the dust cap on until you connect the fibre, and clean both connector ends before every mating — dirt is the most common cause of a link that will not come up. Not sure?
