LevelOne FVT-2002 — Fast Ethernet Media Converter, RJ45 to ST Multi-Mode Fiber, 2 km

10/100 RJ45 ↔ 100Base-FXST multi-mode · 1310 nmUp to 2 kmLFP · DIP switches

The LevelOne FVT-2002 is an unmanaged Fast Ethernet media converter that links a 10/100Base-TX copper port to 100Base-FX multi-mode fibre with ST connectors, for runs of up to 2 km at 1310 nm. It is meant for installers and IT teams who need to carry a copper network segment across a building, a campus or an industrial site where Cat cable would run out of reach at 100 m.

It is a plug-and-play box: connect the RJ45 side to a switch, router, camera or PC, connect the ST fibre pair to the far end, and power it from the included adapter. Link Fault Pass-through (LFP) lets the devices on both ends see when the fibre or copper link drops, and DIP switches let you force speed and duplex where auto-negotiation is not wanted. The unit can stand on its own or slide into LevelOne's CVH-2000 19-inch converter chassis when you have several links in one rack.

Before you order: This converter has ST connectors and works on multi-mode fibre only, at 100 Mbps. The far end must also be 100Base-FX multi-mode at 1310 nm — typically a second FVT-2002 or a switch with a matching 100Base-FX ST port. It will not link to single-mode fibre, to SC/LC ports without the right patch cord, or to Gigabit (1000Base-SX/LX) fibre ports.

What's in the Box

  • 1 × LevelOne FVT-2002 media converter
  • 1 × power adapter
  • 1 × Quick Installation Guide
  • Fibre patch cords and the CVH-2000 chassis are not included

What It Means in Practice

  • Typical use is a pair: one FVT-2002 at each end of a multi-mode fibre pair turns two copper Ethernet ports into a 2 km fibre link.
  • Fast Ethernet means 100 Mbps — plenty for IP cameras, access control, VoIP, building management or a remote office uplink, but not a replacement for a Gigabit backbone.
  • Fibre is immune to electrical interference and ground-potential differences, which is why it is the safe choice between buildings or near heavy machinery.
  • With LFP enabled, a fibre break is passed through to the copper port, so a managed switch or NVR at the other end reports the link as down instead of silently losing traffic.
  • The DIP switches matter mainly when the copper device has a fixed speed/duplex setting; most modern switches simply auto-negotiate.

What Will Not Work

  • It will not work over single-mode (OS1/OS2, yellow) fibre — for that choose a single-mode model such as the LevelOne FVT-1103 or FVM-1220.
  • It will not connect to SC or LC fibre ports directly; you need an ST-to-SC or ST-to-LC multi-mode patch cord.
  • It cannot run at Gigabit speed and will not link to 1000Base-SX/LX ports.
  • It has no web or SNMP management and no VLAN features — it is a transparent converter.
  • It does not provide PoE on the RJ45 port; powered devices need their own PoE switch or injector.

Key Features

Copper to ST fibre
Converts between 10/100Base-TX RJ45 and 100Base-FX ST multi-mode fibre in one compact box.

2 km reach
Multi-mode transmission up to 2 km at 1310 nm — far beyond the 100 m limit of twisted-pair cable.

LFP and DIP switches
Link Fault Pass-through reports link loss to both ends; DIP switches allow manual speed/duplex settings.

Rack or standalone
Runs as a standalone unit with its own adapter or mounts in the LevelOne CVH-2000 19-inch chassis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need two units?
For a typical point-to-point link, yes — one converter at each end of the fibre. Alternatively, one end can be a switch with a 100Base-FX multi-mode ST port at 1310 nm.
How many fibres does it use?
Two: one for transmit and one for receive (a duplex ST pair). If you have only a single fibre available, look at a BIDI set such as the LevelOne FVT-2202 (single-mode).
Can I connect it to a Gigabit switch?
Yes on the copper side — the RJ45 port links at 10 or 100 Mbps to any standard Ethernet port. The fibre side, however, stays at 100 Mbps.
Singular Expert Insight · Buyer's Guide
The FVT-2002 is the simple, dependable way to reuse existing ST-terminated multi-mode fibre — common in older campus and factory installations — for 100 Mbps links. If your fibre is newer LC or SC, or you need Gigabit, a different converter or an SFP port on your network switches is usually the better plan.
✓ Buy it if your site already has multi-mode fibre with ST connectors and you need a reliable 10/100 copper-to-fibre link up to 2 km.
✕ Skip it if your fibre is single-mode, your links need Gigabit speed, or you want remote management.
→ Also consider LevelOne FVT-1103 (single-mode SC, 40 km), FVM-1220 (managed, single-mode SC, 20 km) or GVM-1101 (managed Gigabit, multi-mode SC).
Not sure which fibre you have? Send us a photo of the connector or the cable print and the model of the equipment at both ends, and we will confirm the right converter before you order.
